The call

DOKU holds real licenses and growing volume, but sits behind GoTo-backed Midtrans with its ownership path unclear after Apis Partners' undisclosed 2026 exit.

Doku processes payments in Indonesia and holds a government license that foreign companies cannot easily obtain, which protects it from outside competitors and AI tools. However, it is smaller and less profitable than Midtrans, which is backed by GoTo and Gojek and dominates the market through their massive user base and lower costs. The biggest question mark is what happened when Apis Partners sold its stake in March 2026 with no public announcement of who bought it or what price, making it impossible to know what insiders thought the company was actually worth.

Why
01
AI pressure: None apparent. No AI agent processes Indonesian payments directly yet; DOKU is adding agentic-commerce and MCP checkout tools rather than being replaced by them. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: Midtrans (owned by GoTo/Gojek/Tokopedia). Midtrans rides GoTo's Gojek and Tokopedia merchant base to dominate Indonesian payment gateway volume, squeezing DOKU's margins as a smaller #2-3 player. Could a giant copy it? Probably.
03
What protects it. Bank Indonesia PSP Category-1 license plus separate QRIS, e-money, e-wallet, and disbursement licenses that foreign entrants cannot easily obtain.
What would change this call
Public disclosure of who bought Apis Partners' DOKU stake and at what valuation. Would clarify DOKU's ownership stability and equity value trajectory.
Ant International converts its Feb 2026 partnership into an equity stake or acquisition of DOKU. Would show DOKU becoming absorbed into Ant's regional rails rather than an independent winner.
DOKU merchant count or transaction volume growth relative to Midtrans and Xendit over next two quarters. Would show whether DOKU is gaining share or merely riding overall market growth.

  • Subscale #2/#3 position against better-funded, better-distributed rivals Midtrans and Xendit. Severity: medium
  • Ant International could roll Doku's merchant book onto its own rails, reducing Doku to a licensing shell. Severity: medium
  • Dependence on Bank Indonesia's QRIS/licensing regime, which faces trade-policy scrutiny. Severity: low

Questions people ask
Is Doku profitable in 2026?
Doku has not disclosed profitability figures. It reports (vendor-claimed) that transaction value grew 79% year-on-year in 2025 versus 2024, per its CEO's February 2026 statement, but no net income, margin, or audited revenue figures are publicly available.
Who owns Doku now?
Doku's ownership is partly unclear. Emtek Group acquired a 50% stake by 2016, and PE firm Apis Partners invested $32M in August 2021, but Apis's own portfolio page shows it exited Doku in March 2026 with no buyer, price, or terms disclosed.
Is Doku bigger than Midtrans?
No. Midtrans, owned by GoTo Financial/Gojek, is widely described as Indonesia's best-known payment gateway as of July 2026, outdistributing Doku through Gojek/Tokopedia ecosystem lock-in, even though Doku holds equivalent Bank Indonesia licenses.
Could AI replace Doku's payment gateway?
Unlikely to fully replace it. Doku holds Bank Indonesia PSP Category-1, QRIS, e-money and e-wallet licenses that AI software cannot bypass. Instead, Doku launched an MCP Server in November 2025 to support AI-agent-initiated payments via Google's AP2 protocol.
Who are Doku's biggest competitors?
Doku's closest rivals are Midtrans (owned by GoTo/Gojek, Indonesia's dominant gateway) and Xendit, a better-funded Southeast Asian PSP licensed across six markets that processes payments for Meta, ByteDance, and Grab, per Xendit's own June 2026 statement.
Will Ant International acquire Doku?
Not confirmed. Doku deepened a strategic partnership with Ant International (Antom/2C2P) in February 2026, and Ant raised $1.2B in July 2026 for Southeast Asia expansion with reported Hong Kong IPO plans, but no equity stake or acquisition of Doku has been disclosed.
