The call

Dollar Tree keeps growing sales through price and mix, not more shoppers walking in, while Dollar General presses on the same low-income customer from a bigger store base.

Dollar Tree sells everyday items at fixed low prices ($1, $3, $5, $7) through a huge network of small stores that have stayed profitable for 20 years. Walmart, Target, and Costco cannot run stores this tiny and this cheap because their business models do not work at that scale, which protects Dollar Tree from direct copying. However, the real question is whether customers are actually visiting more often or just buying more stuff per trip when they do come in, and if store quality improvements do not happen fast enough, shoppers may drift to Dollar General, which is twice as big and operates a similar format.

Why
01
AI pressure: None apparent. Physical dollar-store shopping is not something AI shopping agents or chatbots replace; low-price impulse buys stay in-store. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: Dollar General. Dollar General runs 20,388 US stores, twice Dollar Tree's footprint, and competes head-on for the same low-income shopper. Could a giant copy it? No, they are blocked.
03
What protects it. 9,300+ stores, 19 distribution centers, and over 80% private-label goods that big-box chains can't replicate at this format size.
What would change this call
Dollar Tree traffic trend in Q2 and Q3 FY2026 earnings releases. Shows whether visits keep falling while comps rely only on higher spending per trip.
Share of stores converted to multi-price format by end of FY2026. Shows whether the $3/$5/$7 rollout is expanding fast enough to offset traffic loss.
Progress on 'gold store' remodel completion rate reported in coming quarters. Shows whether store-quality upgrades are closing the roughly one-third shortfall management flagged.

Questions people ask
Is Dollar Tree profitable in 2026?
Yes. Dollar Tree posted FY2025 (ended Jan 31, 2026) net sales of $19.4B, up 10.4% YoY, and Q1 FY2026 diluted EPS of $1.76 versus $1.61 a year earlier, per its May 28, 2026 earnings release. FY2026 guidance targets adjusted EPS of $6.70 to $7.10.
Who is Dollar Tree's biggest competitor?
Dollar General is Dollar Tree's closest rival, operating about 20,388 US stores and generating $42.7B in FY2025 net sales versus Dollar Tree's 9,382 stores, roughly double the scale, as of data compiled through June 30, 2026.
Who owns Dollar Tree stock?
Dollar Tree is publicly traded (NASDAQ: DLTR) with no controlling parent; large holders include Fidelity and BlackRock. Activist fund Mantle Ridge LP sold 12.8 million shares in a June 25, 2026 block trade, with Dollar Tree simultaneously repurchasing $500M of stock.
Is Dollar Tree's multi-price strategy working?
Partially. By the end of FY2025 (Jan 31, 2026) about 5,300 stores had converted to the $1.25/$3/$5/$7 multi-price format, generating roughly 16% of Q4 FY2025 sales, while comps rose 5.3% for the full year, per the March 16, 2026 earnings release.
Is foot traffic declining at Dollar Tree?
Yes. Store traffic fell about 1% in Q1 FY2026 (ended May 2, 2026) even as comparable sales rose 3.5%, meaning growth came from higher average ticket and price mix rather than more shopper visits, according to a June 29, 2026 Seeking Alpha analysis.
