The call

Douban still holds a loyal niche for trusted reviews, but it hasn't raised money, gone public, or shipped any AI response since its scale was overtaken years ago.

Douban is a website where Chinese people rate and review movies, books, and music, then get recommendations based on those ratings. The site built real trust over 20 years because its community actually knows what it's talking about, unlike sites full of fake reviews. But that trust does not matter for size: a younger rival called Xiaohongshu already has 100 million users doing the same thing, and now AI chatbots like Doubao can answer 'what should I watch' questions instantly without needing a whole community. The one thing that could change this is if Douban ships AI features of its own soon and finds a new reason for people to visit beyond recommendations, because six years with no funding round and no obvious AI work suggests the company has stopped trying to compete.

Why
01
AI pressure: Doubao, Qwen, Yuanbao chatbots. Chinese AI chatbots can already answer 'what should I watch or read' without touching Douban's ratings. Could AI do the core job? Yes, likely.
02
Bigger players: Xiaohongshu. Xiaohongshu built a rival interest community and scaled past Douban years ago, now running at 200 to 300 million MAU. Could a giant copy it? Yes, easily.
03
What protects it. Twenty years of user ratings and reviews give Douban a trust and authenticity edge that's hard to fake or fast-copy.
What would change this call
Douban ships an AI-powered recommendation or review feature using its own rating dataset. Would show Douban defending its niche against AI chatbot substitution.
Xiaohongshu or Zhihu scales short-drama IP-licensing deals into material revenue within 12 months. Would show rivals closing Douban's one visible growth avenue.
Douban announces new funding round or IPO filing. Would show renewed investor confidence after six years without capital.

Questions people ask
Is Douban profitable in 2026?
No audited profitability figures are public. Douban is privately held with an estimated annual revenue near $73.6 million (unverified aggregator estimate) and has raised no new funding since a Corporate Minority round on 14 July 2020, suggesting limited fresh capital to fund growth.
Is Douban losing to Xiaohongshu?
Yes. A 2020 academic study found Douban's MAU stagnated from 9.04 million to 8.99 million between January and June 2020 while Xiaohongshu grew from 80 million to over 100 million in the same window; Xiaohongshu now reports 200 to 300 million MAU.
Could AI replace Douban's core function?
Douban's rating and recommendation function overlaps closely with what AI chatbots already do. As of mid 2026 there is no evidence Douban has shipped any named AI feature, while ByteDance's Doubao launched paid Pro agent plans in June 2026, widening the exposure gap.
Is Douban going public?
CEO Yang Bo announced restructuring in 2017 explicitly to lay groundwork for an overseas listing, but no IPO has materialized as of 2026. Douban remains privately held with no confirmed public listing or recent funding update found.
Who owns Douban?
Douban is privately held, founded 6 March 2005 by Yang Bo. Investors include Ceyuan Ventures, Trustbridge Partners, HongShan (formerly Sequoia China), Bertelsmann Asia Investments, and Shanghai Century Publishing Group, with the last tracked funding event dated 14 July 2020.
Who is Douban's biggest competitor?
Xiaohongshu is Douban's biggest competitor by scale, having overtaken it in interest-community engagement with 200 to 300 million MAU versus Douban's much smaller base. Zhihu also directly competes for short-drama IP licensing via its Yanyan Stories imprint as of 2026.
