The call

Doubtnut's free photo-solve trick is now standard in ChatGPT and Google Lens, and it survives today only as a cheap funnel inside Allen's coaching business.

Doubtnut's main idea was simple: take a picture of a math or science question, get the answer broken down step by step. The problem is that ChatGPT, Google's Lens tool, and Photomath (which Google bought in 2023) all do the same thing now, and most of them are free. Doubtnut sold for about $10 million in late 2023, down from a $150 million value in 2020, and is now just a part of Allen (an Indian tutoring company), not its own business anymore. The one thing that could matter is if Allen tries to bundle Doubtnut into a larger tutoring package or combines it with live teachers in a way that plain AI tools cannot match, but there is no sign of that happening yet.

Why
01
AI pressure: ChatGPT, Google Gemini/Lens, Photomath. Free multimodal AI apps now do the same photo-to-solution trick natively, and comparison articles openly call them the ChatGPT replacement for Doubtnut. Could AI do the core job? Yes, likely.
02
Bigger players: Google (via Photomath acquisition and Gemini/Lens). Google bought Photomath specifically to counter ChatGPT and folded photo-solving into Lens, undercutting Doubtnut's core feature for free. Could a giant copy it? Yes, easily.
03
What protects it. Ownership by Allen Career Institute, backed by Bodhi Tree Systems capital, keeps it funded as a student funnel rather than a standalone bet.
What would change this call
Allen issues a public 'Allen Digital' strategy statement naming Doubtnut's role or shutdown. Would show whether Allen sees Doubtnut as worth reinvesting in or as a spent asset.
Doubtnut ships a distinct generative-AI tutoring feature tied to Allen's content, reported in trade press. Would show Doubtnut regaining a differentiated product rather than just legacy traffic.
Physics Wallah or Vedantu announce homework-help/AI-solver features post-2026. Would show same-industry rivals directly targeting Doubtnut's remaining user base.

Questions people ask
Is Doubtnut profitable?
No. Doubtnut burned heavily and was sold in a distress deal for about $10M in December 2023, far below its 2020 valuation of $150M, after cutting monthly cash burn 80% to roughly ₹2.2 crore by March 2023.
Could AI replace Doubtnut?
Largely already has. ChatGPT, Google Gemini/Lens, and Google-owned Photomath now offer free photo-to-solution math help, and 2026 comparison articles explicitly call these tools the modern 'Doubtnut replacement.'
Who owns Doubtnut now?
Doubtnut is a wholly owned subsidiary of Allen Career Institute, which bought it in a distress ('slump') sale for about ₹83 crore (~$10M) in December 2023. Allen itself received a $600M investment from Bodhi Tree Systems in 2022.
Who is Doubtnut's biggest competitor?
Physics Wallah, which IPO'd in November 2025 at roughly $2.8B valuation and holds about 35% of India's online JEE/NEET prep market as of 2025, alongside free AI tools like ChatGPT and Google's Photomath.
What happened to Doubtnut's valuation?
It collapsed from a $150M valuation Byju's explored in 2020 to a roughly $10M distress sale to Allen Career Institute in December 2023, a drop of about 93% in three years.
Does Doubtnut use generative AI or LLM tutoring?
No public evidence as of July 2026 shows Doubtnut has shipped generative AI or LLM-based tutoring since its December 2023 acquisition, unlike rivals Physics Wallah (Sarthi) and Vedantu, which have publicized such features.
