The call

Douyu's core livestreaming business keeps shrinking while cost cuts, not growth, produced its recent small profit.

Douyu is a website where people watch live video streams, mostly of people playing games. The problem is that bigger platforms like Douyin (owned by ByteDance, the TikTok company) and Kuaishou already have more users and better artificial intelligence features, and they are starting to offer gaming streams too. Douyu made money again recently, but only by cutting jobs and costs, not by growing the business. The one thing that could make Douyu's situation much worse is if Douyin launches a proper gaming livestream section with extra rewards for creators, because that would pull even more viewers away from Douyu.

Why
01
AI pressure: ByteDance's Doubao chatbot and Douyin AI-generated content. AI chat and algorithmic short clips on Douyin pull viewer attention and time away from Douyu's gaming livestreams. Could AI do the core job? Only partly.
02
Bigger players: Douyin (ByteDance) and Kuaishou. Both hold CAC livestreaming licenses and bigger user bases, letting them absorb gaming streamers and audiences Douyu once held. Could a giant copy it? Yes, easily.
03
What protects it. Tencent's roughly 40% stake gives Douyu a deep-pocketed backer and a possible buyout path if things worsen.
What would change this call
DouYu reports another quarter of double-digit YoY livestreaming revenue decline. Shows the shrinkage is structural, not a temporary dip.
Douyin or Kuaishou launches a dedicated gaming-livestream vertical or creator incentive program. Confirms unblocked incumbents are actively targeting DouYu's remaining niche.
Tencent take-private talks either resolve into a completed deal or are formally dropped. Clarifies whether the 2022 overhang ends in an exit or leaves minority holders exposed.

Questions people ask
Is Douyu profitable in 2026?
Douyu returned to profitability with FY2025 adjusted net income of RMB40.2 million versus an adjusted net loss of RMB249.2 million in 2024, and Q3 2025 GAAP net income grew 232.8% YoY to RMB11.3 million. The turnaround was driven largely by cost cuts, not core business growth, as of 2025-12-31.
Who owns Douyu?
Tencent Holdings is Douyu's largest shareholder, holding roughly 38-40% of shares and voting power as of 2020-2026 filings. Founder and Chairman Shaojie Chen holds about 18%. Douyu trades publicly on Nasdaq under ticker DOYU.
Is Douyu's core livestreaming business shrinking?
Yes. Douyu's livestreaming revenue fell 26.9% year-over-year to RMB577.8 million in Q2 2025, and trailing-twelve-month total revenue was down 11.6% YoY as of Q1 2026 (2026-03-31), even as diversification into voice social and gaming membership offset some decline.
Could AI replace Douyu's streamers?
Unlikely for live human interaction, which resists AI replacement, but engagement layers like bullet comments are already being automated; Douyu itself shipped AI-powered bullet comment features in Q3 2025 (2025-09-30), while rival platforms face backlash over AI-generated comments.
Who is Douyu's biggest competitor?
Huya is Douyu's closest direct rival in Chinese game-livestreaming; together they held 70-80% combined market share per China's SAMR 2021 merger review (2021-07-12). Larger adjacent giants Douyin and Kuaishou also compete for viewer attention and ad dollars.
Will Tencent take Douyu private?
Unresolved as of mid-2026. Tencent proposed merging Douyu with Huya in October 2020 in a deal valuing the combined firm near $6 billion, but China's SAMR blocked it in July 2021 on antitrust grounds; reports since 2022 of a Tencent-led take-private have not resulted in a closed transaction.
