The call

Edmodo's public product is gone, its parent segment loses money, and its only visible customer is a single government deal signed six years ago.

Edmodo was a free online classroom tool that let teachers and students communicate and share work. Google Classroom beat it by offering the same features for free as part of Google's school products that schools already use, making it hard for Edmodo to convince anyone to switch. Today, Edmodo's main product closed in 2022, and what remains is a small contract with Egypt's government inside NetDragon's education division, which lost hundreds of millions of dollars last year. The one thing that could save it is if NetDragon wins new government contracts in other countries or if Edmodo's revenue starts growing again, but neither has happened in the past six years.

Why
01
AI pressure: Google Classroom with Gemini, Microsoft Teams for Education with Copilot. Google and Microsoft bundle AI grading and lesson tools into free school suites, leaving no reason to pick Edmodo. Could AI do the core job? Yes, likely.
02
Bigger players: Google Classroom / Google Workspace for Education. Google already won the free classroom market years ago; Edmodo's consumer product closed permanently in September 2022. Could a giant copy it? Yes, easily.
03
What protects it. One Egypt government contract from 2020 still running, covering 22 million students, with no second country signed since.
What would change this call
NetDragon's H1 2026 interim results (~August 2026) break out Mynd.ai/Edmodo performance. Shows whether Edmodo is stabilizing, shrinking further, or being wound down.
Any new Edmodo B2G country contract announced beyond Egypt's 2020 deal. Would show the government-procurement model can actually expand.
NetDragon names Edmodo specifically in a funded AI or product strategy announcement. Would show active investment rather than passive legacy holding.

Questions people ask
Is Edmodo still operating in 2026?
Edmodo's free consumer platform at edmodo.com shut down permanently on September 22, 2022. What remains is Edmodo, LLC, a legal entity under NetDragon's Mynd.ai education segment used for occasional government contracts, with no new country deals announced since Egypt in 2020.
Who owns Edmodo?
Edmodo is wholly owned by NetDragon Websoft Holdings Limited (HKEX: 0777), a Hong Kong listed Chinese gaming and education conglomerate that acquired Edmodo on April 8, 2018 for $137.5 million in cash and stock.
Is Edmodo profitable?
No. NetDragon's Mynd.ai segment, which includes Edmodo, posted a core segmental loss of RMB 358 million in FY2025, while NetDragon's consolidated revenue fell 26% year over year, per its FY2025 annual results filed March 26, 2026.
Could AI replace what Edmodo used to do?
Largely already has. Edmodo's core workflows, feeds, assignment distribution, and quiz grading are commodity admin tasks now natively offered free by Google Classroom and Microsoft Teams for Education, which is part of why Edmodo's free tier became commercially unviable by August 2022.
Is it safe to take a job at Edmodo or NetDragon's education unit?
Risky. Edmodo's consumer business is defunct since September 22, 2022, its parent Mynd.ai segment posted a RMB 358 million core loss in FY2025, and no Edmodo-specific product news or new government contracts have surfaced since 2022, suggesting a shrinking or wind-down trajectory.
Who is Edmodo's biggest competitor?
Google Classroom, bundled free with Google Workspace for Education, is cited repeatedly as the dominant platform that eroded Edmodo's user base; migration guides after Edmodo's 2022 shutdown direct former users to Google Classroom, Canvas, Schoology, and Moodle.
