The call

Edsby keeps loyal school boards and two national contracts, but six years without new funding and a shrinking team leave it exposed as bigger rivals fold AI into their platforms for free.

Edsby makes software that helps schools manage lessons, grades, and student information. It has won some big contracts in New Zealand and Georgia, and gets good ratings from industry reviewers. But three much larger companies, Google Classroom, Instructure Canvas, and PowerSchool Schoology, control most of the market, and free AI tools like ChatGPT and MagicSchool AI are doing similar teaching tasks that Edsby tried to add to its platform. The company has not grown its team or raised new money in six years, so the question now is whether it can stabilize as a smaller, profitable business or whether it will need to be bought by a bigger player.

Why
01
AI pressure: MagicSchool AI, Brisk Teaching, ChatGPT for Teachers. Free or cheap AI lesson and grading tools copy Edsby's new Teacher Assistant feature before it gets traction with teachers. Could AI do the core job? Only partly.
02
Bigger players: PowerSchool (Schoology), Instructure Canvas, Google Classroom. Three players already hold about 74% of the K-12 LMS market and can bundle AI features Edsby can't match on budget. Could a giant copy it? Yes, easily.
03
What protects it. Deep gradebook and SIS integration plus national contracts in New Zealand and Georgia that are costly to rip out.
What would change this call
Edsby announces a new funding round or continued 6+ year funding gap. Shows whether investors still back growth or the company is stalling financially.
Georgia (country) national LMS rollout progresses, stalls, or is cancelled. Tests whether Edsby's sovereign-nation deployment model actually scales.
A major Canadian board (e.g., York Region, Durham Catholic) switches to Canvas or Schoology. Would show Edsby's core Canadian niche is eroding to bigger rivals.

Questions people ask
Is Edsby profitable in 2026?
No public financials exist since Edsby is private. Third-party revenue estimates range from $2.8M to $9.5M and disagree by 3x, so profitability cannot be confirmed. Its last disclosed funding was a $5.3M Series A in September 2020, with no new round reported since, as of July 2026.
Could AI replace Edsby's platform?
Edsby's system-of-record functions (SIS integration, report cards, FERPA-compliant data) are hard for AI to replace, but its April 2025 AI Teacher Assistant faces direct commoditization from free tools like MagicSchool AI (7M users) and Anthropic's Claude for Teachers, launched July 17, 2026.
Who owns Edsby?
Edsby is privately held and founder-controlled. It was founded in April 2010 by Steve Asbury, Jon Asbury, Scott Welch and John Myers, with Myers still serving as CEO as of 2026. No IPO or acquisition has been reported.
Who is Edsby's biggest competitor?
Edsby competes against three dominant K-12 LMS incumbents: Google Classroom (~31% market share), Instructure Canvas (~24%), and PowerSchool's Schoology (~19%), which together controlled roughly 74% of the K-12 LMS market as of May 2026 per ListedTech.
Has Edsby raised any funding recently?
No. Edsby's most recent disclosed funding round was a $5.3 million Series A in September 2020, led by Chris Besse. As of July 2026, nearly six years have passed without a publicly reported new funding round.
What are Edsby's biggest recent wins?
Edsby was selected in 2024 as the national LMS platform for the country of Georgia (about 640,000 students, World Bank-backed), and it built New Zealand's Te Rito national student data exchange in 2019 covering roughly 800,000 learners across 2,500 schools.
