The call

Contracts hold the schools EP already has, but free AI tools chip at the daily habit those contracts were built on, and KKR's exit clock is ticking.

Education Perfect makes homework and practice software for schools across Australia and New Zealand. It is hard to replace right now because schools have signed multi-year contracts and teachers are used to how it works. However, free AI tools like ChatGPT for Teachers and Claude for Teachers can do much of what Education Perfect does, and these tools are getting better and cheaper fast. The biggest thing to watch is whether teachers and schools start using these free AI tools instead of paying for Education Perfect, and when the investment firm that owns it (KKR) decides to sell the company.

Why
01
AI pressure: ChatGPT for Teachers, Claude for Teachers, MagicSchool AI. Free AI tools now generate the lesson content and feedback EP charges schools for, teacher by teacher, without a procurement cycle. Could AI do the core job? Yes, likely.
02
Bigger players: IXL Learning, Renaissance/Freckle. Both could localize to ANZ curriculum standards but have not prioritized it yet; a launch would hit EP's core market directly. Could a giant copy it? Yes, easily.
03
What protects it. Multi-year school contracts and embedded teacher workflows across 5,000+ schools that don't switch mid-cycle.
What would change this call
Whether IXL or Renaissance ships an ANZ curriculum-aligned product within 12 months. Would show a same-industry incumbent directly targeting EP's home turf.
Confirmation of KKR exit process (sale, IPO, or refinance) for Education Perfect. Would show the 5-year PE hold window closing and ownership risk materializing.
EP's school/district renewal rates or web traffic trend over the next 12 months. Would show whether teacher habit and procurement lock-in are holding against free AI tools.
Key numbers
  • 5,000+ schools, 1.8M students served (2024-07)
  • Revenue estimates range $26M to $67M (2026-06)
  • Crustdata: 2 open roles, declining web traffic (2026-06)
Named risks
  • Free frontier AI tools (ChatGPT for Teachers, Claude for Teachers) commoditize EP's auto-marking and feedback core. Severity: high
  • KKR nearing five-year PE hold mark with no confirmed exit plan, raising sale or refinance uncertainty. Severity: medium
  • Conflicting headcount (643 vs 873) and declining web traffic signals suggest slowing growth momentum. Severity: medium
  • US incumbents IXL or Renaissance could localize ANZ curriculum content and erode EP's regional moat. Severity: medium
  • Revenue and headcount data from third parties are inconsistent, undermining confidence in traction claims. Severity: low

Questions people ask
Is Education Perfect profitable?
No profit figures are publicly disclosed. Third-party revenue estimates range wildly from $26M to $67M as of June 2026 across data brokers like ZoomInfo and Growjo, with no independent confirmation, making profitability status unverifiable from public sources.
Who owns Education Perfect now?
KKR acquired a majority stake in June 2021 at a ~NZ$455 million valuation, with Five V Capital retaining a minority stake as of August 2025. No KKR exit, sale, or refinancing of Education Perfect has been publicly reported as of mid-2026.
Could AI replace Education Perfect?
EP's core auto-marking and feedback tools overlap directly with OpenAI's ChatGPT for Teachers (Nov 2025) and Anthropic's Claude for Teachers (July 2026). EP still holds 5,000+ school contracts as of July 2024, but free AI tools threaten its differentiation.
Is Education Perfect a safe company to join in 2026?
Signals conflict: Revelio Labs counted 643 employees in December 2025 while Crustdata reported 873 in June 2026 with only 2 open roles and a 'modest growth' score of 11/100, plus declining web traffic quarter over quarter.
Who is Education Perfect's biggest competitor?
IXL Learning (US, 6,400+ skills) and Renaissance Learning, which acquired Freckle in 2019, are the largest global incumbents. Neither has localized fully to ANZ curricula as of 2026, though Australia's Stile Education competes directly with AI grading.
Has KKR sold Education Perfect?
No sale has been reported. As of May 2026, KKR was actively rotating other portfolio assets like Flora Food Group and pursuing a UP Education bid, but no divestment of Education Perfect had surfaced in public reporting.
