The call

Educative sells explanations that free chatbots now give away, and its strongest brand asset has already walked out the door to a competitor.

Educative runs an online learning site where people pay to read tutorials and practice coding problems. It is easy for ChatGPT or Claude to replace this because they answer the same questions for free in seconds, and there is nothing special about Educative's data or customer lock-in that competitors cannot match. The company has lost about one-third of its employees since 2023, has not raised funding in years, and its most popular course content moved to a rival called Design Gurus. The one thing that could change the picture is if Educative lands major new funding or if the merged Coursera-Udemy giant chooses to bury Educative rather than compete with it directly, which would happen by mid-2026 when their deal closes.

Why
01
AI pressure: ChatGPT, Claude, and AI interview copilots like Final Round AI. Free chatbots now explain code and run mock interviews on demand, hitting the same need Educative charges $199/year for. Could AI do the core job? Yes, likely.
02
Bigger players: Coursera plus Udemy combined entity. A 270 million learner platform with heavy AI personalization is set to close its merger in H2 2026 and could enter this niche directly. Could a giant copy it? Yes, easily.
03
What protects it. None apparent, no exclusive data, no enterprise lock-in, and its flagship Grokking brand creator already left for rival Design Gurus.
What would change this call
Educative announces new funding round or discloses Fortune 500 enterprise logos within 12 months. Would show it is building a defensible moat instead of drifting toward distressed sale.
Confirmed public layoff notice or headcount filing resolving the Revelio vs Crustdata conflict. Would confirm whether the company is actually contracting or holding steady.
Coursera-Udemy merger closes and either enters interview-prep/dev-skills niche or ignores it. Would show whether the merged giant intends to compete directly with Educative.

Questions people ask
Is Educative profitable?
Educative is private and discloses no audited financials. Third party revenue estimates range from ZoomInfo's ~$87M to Growjo's ~$168.8M (2022) to SignalHire's $100M-$500M, all unverified and conflicting, as of July 2026, so profitability cannot be confirmed.
Has Educative raised any new funding recently?
No. Educative's last confirmed round was a $12M Series A led by Matrix Partners on May 19, 2021. A June 2026 Crustdata profile notes the company had not raised funding in 62 months, meaning no round since 2021.
Is Educative laying off employees?
Data conflicts. Revelio Labs shows headcount falling from 810 in 2023 to 551 by December 2025, a 31.9% two-year decline, while Crustdata reports ~873-875 employees with +3.4% YoY growth as of June 2026. No confirmed layoff announcement exists.
Could AI replace Educative?
Educative's core product, static text-based courses and pattern-based interview prep, overlaps heavily with what ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini generate free on demand. AI-native interview copilots like Final Round AI and LockedIn AI were shipping comparable mock-interview features faster as of mid-2026.
Who is Educative's biggest competitor?
Design Gurus, founded by the original 'Grokking the System Design Interview' author who migrated that content off Educative's platform to his own site, directly rivals Educative's strongest brand as of 2026. LeetCode dominates pure coding practice.
Who owns Educative?
Educative Inc. is privately held and venture-backed, founded in 2015 by brothers Fahim ul Haq (CEO, ex-Microsoft/Facebook) and Naeem ul Haq (CTO). Investors include Matrix Partners and Trilogy Equity Partners; total funding is roughly $14.6M-$15M with no valuation disclosed.
