The call

The testing product works and schools keep using it, but the brand has been folded into Pear Deck Learning with a skeleton crew, while three larger rivals fight for the same renewals.

Edulastic makes software that helps teachers create tests and quizzes and track how students are doing. It is hard to replace because schools have locked it into their computer systems and need special permission from the government to switch, but three much larger companies (HMH, Renaissance, and Instructure) offer almost the same thing with more resources and more schools already using them. The company was bought in 2021 and folded into a bigger product portfolio in 2024 with only 11 people working on it, so the real question is whether the parent company will keep investing in the Edulastic name or quietly merge it into their other products.

Why
01
AI pressure: Generic AI item-generation tools plus AI features inside HMH/NWEA MAP Growth and Renaissance. AI can generate test questions and rubrics cheaply, eroding the value of Pear's 80,000-question bank as a selling point. Could AI do the core job? Only partly.
02
Bigger players: HMH/NWEA, Renaissance/Illuminate, Instructure/MasteryConnect. Three much bigger, already-consolidated rivals sell the same compliance-locked assessment product to the same districts. Could a giant copy it? Yes, easily.
03
What protects it. State testing compliance requirements and existing district SIS integrations make schools slow to switch mid-contract.
What would change this call
HMH/NWEA ships a formative-assessment layer on top of MAP Growth. Direct competitive attack on Pear Assessment's renewal base by a larger consolidated rival.
Pear Assessment/Pear Deck Learning brand gets folded fully into GoGuardian without standalone naming. Parent is deprioritizing the product, consistent with quiet wind-down rather than growth investment.
Sumeru Equity Partners announces a sale, secondary auction, or recapitalization of GoGuardian/Pear Deck Learning. Signals PE exit timeline, which could mean further cost-cutting or ownership change affecting the product.

Questions people ask
Is Edulastic still a company, or did it get absorbed into something else?
Edulastic was acquired by GoGuardian in June 2021 and rebranded to Pear Assessment on January 22, 2024, when GoGuardian unified it with Pear Deck, Pear Practice, and Pear Deck Tutor under a new 'Pear Deck Learning' umbrella brand. The Edulastic name is now legacy.
Who owns Edulastic (Pear Assessment) today?
Edulastic operates under GoGuardian, which is backed by growth equity firm Sumeru Equity Partners since the June 2021 acquisition. GoGuardian's CEO changed from founder Advait Shinde to Rich Preece in 2024, and no IPO or new funding round for the unit has been reported since 2021.
Is Edulastic profitable?
No public profitability figures exist. Third-party revenue estimates (aggregator sources) put Edulastic near $15.9 million, but these are unverified and excluded from confirmed data. As a PE-owned subsidiary since 2021 with no disclosed financials, standalone profitability cannot be confirmed as of mid-2026.
Could AI replace Edulastic's core product?
Partially. Edulastic itself shipped AI item-generation and rubric-grading tools (Question Generator, Assisted Rubrics) in September 2023, showing item writing is already being automated. But its secure testing delivery, SIS integrations, and 10-year certified question bank remain harder for generic AI tools to replicate as of 2026.
Who is Edulastic's biggest competitor?
Pear Assessment (Edulastic) competes against three larger consolidated rivals: HMH, which acquired NWEA in November 2023; Renaissance, which acquired Illuminate Education/FastBridge; and Instructure, which acquired MasteryConnect and Certica, per a Tyton Partners analysis published November 16, 2023.
Is it safe to take a job at Edulastic/Pear Assessment?
The product is real and shipping, with feature releases through mid-2026, but standalone headcount tracked under the Edulastic/Pear Assessment entity fell to about 11 people by June 20, 2026, per Crustdata, as staff were absorbed into GoGuardian's broader Pear Deck Learning organization.
