The call

A two person startup is promising neutral, portable AI memory just as OpenAI, Google, and Anthropic ship their own memory features for free.

Egoist Machines wants to be a neutral middleman that helps people manage their memories across different AI assistants, since those big companies (OpenAI, Google, Anthropic) won't let memories move between them. But the three giants are shipping their own memory tools every month and own both the technology and the customers, making it hard for a two-person team to build something they cannot copy or replace. The company's only real chance is proving that businesses need independent memory tools for legal reasons (like showing what data was used to make decisions), but they have not yet signed any paying customers to prove this works.

Why
01
AI pressure: OpenAI, Google, Anthropic native memory features. OpenAI's Dreaming and Atlas, plus Gemini memory, already do natively what Egoist sells as a separate layer. Could AI do the core job? Yes, likely.
02
Bigger players: OpenAI (Sign in with ChatGPT universal identity). If ChatGPT becomes the universal login everywhere, the cross app memory gap Egoist targets may just close on its own. Could a giant copy it? Yes, easily.
03
What protects it. Nothing proven yet: no signed API partners, no regulation forcing portability, just an unlaunched product and a pitch.
What would change this call
Egoist Machines AI Passport reaches GA by end of summer 2026 as promised. Confirms product execution and lets partner signups be checked publicly.
Egoist announces a signed API integration partner (not waitlist) before or at GA. Would validate the neutral-broker thesis with real commercial traction.
OpenAI's 'Sign in with ChatGPT' universal identity becomes standard login across third-party apps. Would remove the data-fragmentation problem Egoist exists to solve.

Named risks
  • Frontier labs' native memory (Dreaming, Atlas, Gemini memory) erodes the exact pain point Egoist targets. Severity: high
  • No signed integration partners disclosed before promised GA in later summer 2026. Severity: high
  • Two-person team with no independently confirmed funding round beyond YC S26 acceptance. Severity: medium
  • OpenAI's explored universal 'Sign in with ChatGPT' identity could remove cross-app fragmentation pain entirely. Severity: medium
  • Consumer press hype around co-founder McGurk could inflate waitlist expectations ahead of unproven product. Severity: low
