The call

Emeritus is the largest player in its niche but growth has slowed sharply and its OPM model just watched a peer go bankrupt.

Emeritus partners with universities to run their online degree programs, taking a cut of tuition revenue. A competitor called 2U that used the same business model just went bankrupt in 2024, which is a red flag. The real problem is that universities are getting better at running these programs themselves, AI chatbots can now tutor students, and universities are demanding bigger cuts, which squeezes Emeritus's profits. The one thing that could turn this around is if Emeritus's growth actually speeds up again in 2025 instead of staying flat, but right now there's no clear reason why it would.

Why
01
AI pressure: Generative AI tutors and course-build tools (ChatGPT-style coaching, university in-house AI content). AI can generate course content and tutoring cheaply, cutting the value Emeritus adds between universities and learners. Could AI do the core job? Only partly.
02
Bigger players: 2U/edX (Chapter 11, 2024) and Coursera/upGrad running the same online program model. 2U's bankruptcy shows the university revenue-share model can collapse, and Coursera competes for the same non-exclusive university deals. Could a giant copy it? Probably.
03
What protects it. 80-90+ university partnerships and brand trust that let it sell corporate and consumer courses at scale.
What would change this call
Emeritus FY25 revenue print vs. ~$580-600M guidance. Shows whether growth reaccelerated or +12% is the new normal.
Any major university partner publicly ends or renegotiates its Emeritus deal. Would show university disintermediation eroding the core partnership moat.
Coursera or LinkedIn launches a competing credential product with named university partners. Would show rivals capturing cohort share Emeritus currently holds.

Questions people ask
Is Emeritus profitable as of 2026?
Emeritus's parent Eruditus narrowed its EBITDA loss 83% from Rs417 crore in FY23 to Rs69 crore in FY24, and the company stated it achieved full-year profitability in the year before its October 2024 Series F raise, per its own press release.
Is Emeritus still growing fast?
Growth has slowed sharply: Eruditus's revenue rose only 12% year over year to about $448M in FY24, down from 63 to 70% growth the prior year, as the company deliberately pivoted from growth to profitability.
Who owns Emeritus and is it public?
Emeritus is privately held under parent Eruditus, backed by SoftBank, Accel, TPG, and Chan Zuckerberg Initiative among others, valued around $3.2B since August 2021. It is not publicly traded but is planning a Singapore-to-India domicile flip as an IPO precursor, still incomplete as of June 2026.
Could AI replace Emeritus's business?
AI is commoditizing generic content delivery and tutoring, which Emeritus itself is adopting via an in-house AI Tutor bot. But its core moat, exclusive-feeling relationships with 80 to 90+ universities like MIT and Wharton for credentialing, is harder for AI to replicate directly.
Who is Emeritus's biggest competitor?
2U/edX ran the same online-program-manager model as Emeritus and filed Chapter 11 bankruptcy in 2024 after universities pushed back on revenue-share terms. Coursera and India's upGrad also compete for the same non-exclusive university partnerships.
What is Emeritus's current valuation?
Emeritus's parent Eruditus was valued at roughly $3.2B in its August 2021 Series E ($650M) and that valuation stayed flat through its October 2024 Series F ($150M, TPG's Rise Fund), a sign investors have not marked it up in over three years.
