The call

eToro makes real money and holds real licenses, but its social trading idea is easy to copy and its AI pivot has not yet proven it can replace crypto swings as a growth engine.

eToro is an online brokerage that lets people trade stocks, crypto, and other investments, and lets them copy trades from other successful traders on the platform. The company makes real money (over $200 million net income in 2025) and operates in many countries with real licenses, which is hard and expensive to replicate. But its main draw, the copy-trading feature, is becoming ordinary as both artificial intelligence tools and bigger competitors like Robinhood add the same thing, and eToro's new AI trading product launched in mid-2026 has not yet proven itself against well-funded rivals. The one thing that could matter most is whether enough regular people actually use eToro's new AI features in the next few quarters, because without a real difference there, it becomes just another brokerage.

Why
01
AI pressure: Robinhood Cortex and Agentic Trading beta, plus generic AI trading agents. AI agents copy trades and read sentiment for free, so eToro's CopyTrader edge gets replicated by any broker with an API. Could AI do the core job? Only partly.
02
Bigger players: Robinhood. Robinhood has more capital and a bigger US base, and it shipped its own AI agent tools first, in May 2026. Could a giant copy it? Probably.
03
What protects it. Licenses in the UK, Cyprus, Australia, US and elsewhere plus 4 million funded accounts make it hard to copy fast.

Did eToro have layoffs?
Yes. eToro cut about 7% of its global workforce, roughly 105 of ~1,500 positions, in January 2026, with more than half of those roles based in Israel, as part of a stated right sizing for growth, per a January 14, 2026 report.
Who owns eToro and is it public?
eToro Group Ltd. is publicly traded on Nasdaq under ticker ETOR, following its upsized IPO on May 14, 2025 priced at $52 per share, raising about $620M at a roughly $4.3B valuation. It was founded in 2007 by Yoni and Ronen Assia and David Ring.
Could AI replace eToro's CopyTrader feature?
Partly. eToro's core copy trading model, mirroring human investors, is directly challenged by AI trading agents. eToro responded by launching its own Agent Portfolios beta on March 26, 2026, letting users connect AI agents to trade autonomously via API within its regulated platform.
Who is eToro's biggest competitor?
Robinhood is the most direct threat, having launched its own Cortex AI and Agentic Trading beta on May 27, 2026, targeting the same AI-driven retail trading space with greater US capital and brand strength than eToro.
What legal risk does eToro face in Australia?
eToro faces an ASIC federal court lawsuit alleging its CFD product breached design and distribution rules, with roughly 20,000 clients said to have lost money between 2021 and 2023. Evidence hearings concluded December 2025, closing submissions were set for April 2026.
