The call

Fiverr is racing to replace vanishing low-cost gigs with higher-value work before AI substitution drains the core business dry.

Fiverr lets people hire freelancers online to do writing, design, translation, and other tasks. The problem is that AI tools like ChatGPT and Claude now do much of this work for free or cheap, so fewer people need to hire on Fiverr. The number of buyers dropped from 3.6 million to 2.9 million, and the company's core business shrank 13.6% in early 2026. Fiverr is trying to shift toward bigger, more complex projects that AI cannot do alone, and that part is growing fast, but it is still small and faces tough competition from Upwork (which is twice as large) and Toptal (which already focuses on premium freelancers). The one thing that could change everything is whether Fiverr can grow its high-value work fast enough before the basic freelancer business disappears entirely.

Why
01
AI pressure: ChatGPT, Claude, and similar generative AI tools. Buyers now generate logos, copy, and translations themselves, cutting into Fiverr's low-value gig categories directly. Could AI do the core job? Yes, likely.
02
Bigger players: Upwork. Upwork posts $787.8M revenue nearly double Fiverr's $430.9M and holds far more share in the same freelance category. Could a giant copy it? Yes, easily.
03
What protects it. Fifteen years of buyer reviews, escrow trust, and repeat-hire data that a brand-new AI tool or marketplace can't replicate overnight.
