Flashbots
Builds the open-source plumbing that lets Ethereum validators auction off block space to extract MEV.
On the record
Checkpoint: Ethereum's Glamsterdam fork cycle, where enshrined PBS proposals could move from research to hard-fork spec
The call
Flashbots runs the software most of Ethereum quietly depends on, but it hasn't raised money in three years and the protocol it serves is slowly moving to do the job itself.
It is hard to copy right now because Flashbots has already done the work and everyone relies on it, but Ethereum's own developers plan to build this same job directly into the blockchain code itself, which would make Flashbots unnecessary. The company does not say how much money it makes, and its value depends on whether Ethereum actually goes through with that plan and how fast it happens.
Why
01
AI pressure: None apparent. AI agents could eventually automate MEV search and block-building, but no AI lab or product targets Flashbots directly today. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: Ethereum Foundation (enshrined proposer-builder separation roadmap). If Ethereum bakes proposer-builder separation into the protocol itself, MEV-Boost's role gets absorbed at the base layer. Could a giant copy it? Probably.
03
What protects it. MEV-Boost runs in ~90% of Ethereum blocks and BuilderNet ties Flashbots into a builder co-op with Beaverbuild and Nethermind, hard to replace overnight.
What would change this call
Enshrined proposer-builder separation moves onto an Ethereum hard-fork proposal schedule. Shows the protocol is set to absorb MEV-Boost's core function, commoditizing Flashbots' moat.
Flashbots announces a new priced funding round or updated valuation by mid-2027. Shows whether investors still back the $1B valuation after a 3+ year funding gap.
SUAVE/Andromeda mainnet ships with a working fee or revenue model, or is publicly shelved. Shows whether Flashbots can convert its dominant position into durable monetization.

Key numbers
- MEV-Boost used in construction of 90%+ of Ethereum blocks
- Last priced round: $60M at $1B valuation
- Estimated revenue $3.5M-$10.5M/yr, unconfirmed by company
Named risks
- Enshrined proposer-builder separation could commoditize MEV-Boost at the protocol layer.
- No new priced funding round since July 2023, three-year funding gap as of mid-2026.
- No disclosed revenue figures, monetization model at scale remains unproven.
- Rival independent block builders capture majority of MEV-Boost block production value.
- Supply-chain attacks impersonating Flashbots tools to steal private keys, recurring vector.
Rivals, as read in July 2026
| Rival | Direction | Evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Ethereum Foundation (enshrined PBS roadmap) | losing to | Protocol-level PBS could absorb MEV-Boost's role, still in research phase as of 2026-07 |
| beaverbuild, Titan, rsync-builder | gaining on | Produced ~80% of MEV-Boost blocks Oct 2023 to Mar 2024 per arxiv study |
| bloXroute | contesting | Runs competing MEV-Boost relays carrying large share of relay traffic as of 2026-07-23 |
| Base and Unichain (rollup operators) | contesting | Currently integrate Flashbots' Rollup-Boost but could in-source sequencing |
Questions people ask
- Is Flashbots profitable in 2026?
- No audited revenue has ever been disclosed by Flashbots. The company's last confirmed capital event is a $60M Series B led by Paradigm at a $1B valuation, closed July 25, 2023, and no new priced round has been reported as of July 2026.
- Who owns Flashbots?
- Flashbots is a private, Cayman Islands-registered company backed by Paradigm, which led both its seed round and its $60M Series B at a $1B valuation on July 25, 2023, alongside Dragonfly, Pantera Capital and Alliance DAO.
- Could AI replace Flashbots?
- Unlikely. Flashbots' core work is cryptography, TEE engineering and auction mechanism design for Ethereum block building, not customer-facing knowledge work. No AI-driven product features have been announced as of the August 21, 2025 Superchain release.
- Who is Flashbots' biggest competitor?
- Independent block builders beaverbuild, Titan and rsync-builder produced roughly 80% of MEV-Boost blocks between October 2023 and March 2024 per academic research, while bloXroute competes directly on MEV-Boost relay infrastructure.
- What is Flashbots' biggest structural risk?
- Ethereum's own roadmap toward enshrined proposer-builder separation could absorb MEV-Boost's function directly into the protocol, threatening to commoditize Flashbots' flagship open-source software from below.
- How dominant is Flashbots' MEV-Boost software?
- MEV-Boost is reported to be used in the construction of more than 90% of Ethereum blocks as of July 19, 2026, making it the de facto standard for proposer-builder separation on the network.
