The call

Formative stays embedded in districts through integrations and contracts, but free AI tools and a stalled parent company leave its growth flat and its future tied to Newsela.

Formative makes online quizzes and assessments for schools. It has real stickiness because districts have loaded 6 billion student answers into it and wired it to their gradebooks and student records, making it hard to rip out. But it faces three threats: Google Classroom and Microsoft Teams keep adding free quiz tools; ChatGPT for Teachers (free through mid-2027) can now write and grade quizzes as well; and rivals like Kahoot and Quizizz already compete for the same classroom time. The one thing that matters is whether teachers keep paying for Formative's extra features (auto-grading, feedback) once free ChatGPT does the job. If they stop paying, parent company Newsela's flat growth turns negative, and an equity holder's exit gets much worse.

Why
01
AI pressure: OpenAI's ChatGPT for Teachers. Free ChatGPT for Teachers through June 2027 replicates the paid feedback and question generation that drive Formative's teacher upgrades. Could AI do the core job? Only partly.
02
Bigger players: Google Classroom with Gemini; Microsoft Teams for Education. Google and Microsoft could fold formative-assessment features into classroom tools teachers already use for free. Could a giant copy it? Yes, easily.
03
What protects it. Deep LMS and SIS integrations plus district procurement contracts make switching costly once a school is on Formative.
What would change this call
Newsela raises a new primary funding round or discloses a down-round/M&A exit. Shows whether investor confidence in Formative's parent is rising or falling.
Digital Promise's $26M K-12 AI Infrastructure Program releases open formative-assessment datasets by June 2026. Would show a free alternative commoditizing Formative's core AI interpretation feature.
Google Classroom+Gemini or Microsoft Forms ships direct formative-assessment feedback tools. Would show incumbents moving from peripheral to direct competition with Formative's product.

Questions people ask
Is Formative still an independent company?
No. Formative was acquired by Newsela, announced June 27-28, 2023, and now operates as a subsidiary. Financial terms were undisclosed, and Formative's finances are folded into Newsela's, with no standalone revenue or headcount reported since the deal.
Who owns Formative now?
Formative is owned by Newsela, a K-12 instructional content company, following an acquisition announced June 27-28, 2023. Newsela itself is private and venture-backed, last valued near $1.0 billion at its February 2021 Series D round led by TCV.
Could AI replace Formative's paid features?
Much of Formative's paid-tier value, generating assessment items, feedback, and grading, overlaps with free tools like OpenAI's ChatGPT for Teachers (free through June 2027) and MagicSchool AI's 80+ educator tools, per data as of June 29, 2026 and May 28, 2026.
Is Newsela, Formative's parent, growing or shrinking?
Signals are mixed but weak. Crustdata reports Newsela headcount fell from ~595 in June 2021 to ~522 by July 2026 (Growth Score 12/100), while TrueUp counted 350 employees as of June 30, 2026, and no primary funding round has closed since February 2021.
Who are Formative's biggest competitors?
Nearpod, Pear Deck, Kahoot!, Quizizz, and Socrative are the closest direct competitors in live classroom-response tools, per buyer's guides from February and June 2026. A April 22, 2026 AI-visibility leaderboard scored Formative at 64, behind Kahoot (72), Quizizz (71), and Nearpod (67).
How much revenue does Newsela (Formative's parent) generate?
Estimates diverge sharply: Datanyze/ZoomInfo put it near $100.6 million (undated), while PrivCo estimated $380 million for 2024 (as of March 14, 2024). Neither figure is audited or company-disclosed, so the real number is unverified.
