The call

Forter still guards real merchant data no rival has, but Stripe and Adyen are copying its pitch while its own valuation sits frozen and headcount shrinks.

Forter sells fraud detection to large online retailers by combining data from many payment processors, chargeback guarantees, and deep integrations with checkout systems, making it genuinely hard to replace overnight. However, Stripe, Visa, Adyen, and PayPal are each building their own cross-processor fraud networks with similar guarantees, which directly challenges Forter's main selling point: being neutral and working across all payment companies at once. The company has been stuck at a $3 billion valuation since 2021 without growing its team much, even as public competitors trade much cheaper, suggesting the market is skeptical about pricing power. The one thing that could reset expectations is whether these payment giants actually win over Forter's biggest customers by offering bundled fraud protection, which would mark a shift from slow decline to real lost business.

Why
01
AI pressure: Generic frontier AI fraud classifiers (open models, in-house bank/retailer models). Raw AI models can't match Forter's shared identity graph across 1M merchants, so AI feeds their detection instead of replacing it. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: Stripe Radar, Adyen, Visa/CyberSource, PayPal, Shopify native fraud stacks. Stripe and Adyen are building multiprocessor fraud tools with chargeback guarantees, the exact neutral-network pitch Forter used to sell against them. Could a giant copy it? Probably.
03
What protects it. A decade of shared transaction data across Nordstrom, Sephora, Instacart and 10,000 merchants that a single processor can't replicate.
What would change this call
Forter announces a new priced funding round or files for IPO by late 2027. Would show whether the $3B valuation from 2021 still holds or needs resetting.
A named Forter enterprise customer (e.g. Nordstrom, Sephora, ASOS) switches to Stripe, Adyen, or Visa's native fraud bundle. Would confirm processor-native fraud tools are pulling large accounts away from Forter.
Public peer Riskified's stock trades below 1.5x revenue. Would signal investors are discounting fraud-detection vendors broadly, pressuring Forter's private valuation.
Key numbers
  • $3B valuation, unchanged since May 2021 (2021-05-25)
  • Revenue ~$103M in 2024, up ~25% YoY (2025-11-27)
  • Headcount down 7% YoY to ~710 employees (2026-06-24)
Named risks
  • Valuation frozen at $3B since May 2021 with no new priced round confirmed as of mid-2026. Severity: high
  • Payment processors (Stripe, Adyen, Visa/CyberSource) building native cross-processor fraud plus guarantee bundles that erode Forter's neutrality moat. Severity: high
  • Headcount plateaued or declining per multiple trackers (500-780 range) despite claimed revenue growth. Severity: medium
  • Public peer Riskified trades at only ~2x revenue, implying weak category multiples if Forter seeks a raise or IPO. Severity: medium
  • Conflicting third-party data on HQ, revenue and headcount signal weak public financial transparency ahead of any liquidity event. Severity: low

Questions people ask
Is Forter profitable in 2026?
Forter has not disclosed profitability. Its last public financial claim was over 100% YoY revenue growth and $250B+ in annual transaction volume protected, made May 25, 2021 alongside its $300M Series F at a $3B valuation. No audited results have been released since.
What is Forter's current valuation?
Forter's last confirmed valuation is $3B, set May 25, 2021 when it raised a $300M Series F led by Tiger Global with Bessemer, Sequoia and others. No new priced funding round has been publicly confirmed since, over five years as of mid-2026.
Could AI replace Forter's fraud detection product?
Forter's core scoring task is automatable, but its moat is proprietary consortium identity-graph data spanning a company-claimed 2 billion shoppers and 1 million merchants (as of May 2026), plus capital-backed chargeback guarantees, not the underlying algorithm itself.
Who are Forter's biggest competitors?
Direct rivals are public peer Riskified (about $345M TTM revenue, roughly 2x revenue market multiple as of June 2026), Signifyd, and Sift. A bigger threat is payment processors: Stripe Radar's multiprocessor fraud network went live and is scoring non-Stripe transactions as of June 2026.
Has Forter filed for an IPO?
No. As of July 2026 Forter remains privately held with no IPO filing reported. It last raised capital in May 2021 (a $300M Series F at $3B), and one LinkedIn data point references a secondary share sale in August 2022 but no new primary round.
Who founded Forter and when?
Forter was founded in 2013 by Michael Reitblat, Liron Damri, and Alon Shemesh, former colleagues at Fraud Sciences, a company later acquired by PayPal, according to a November 19, 2020 Globes report on Forter's Series E.
