The call

Gcore runs real infrastructure and wins analyst praise, but its AI pivot rides on a fraction of hyperscaler capital while headcount shrinks.

G-Core Labs operates data centers and networks across 210+ locations worldwide, delivering video and applications faster to end users, plus renting computing power for artificial intelligence tasks. The company's main claim is that it offers European-controlled infrastructure free from U.S. control, but bigger competitors like Cloudflare, Akamai, and Amazon Web Services can all build or expand into Europe, and they have far more money to spend on the expensive servers and chips needed for AI work. The company raised only $60 million while its rivals spend billions each year on these tools, which means G-Core must prove it can keep up with funding and stay competitive in a race where scale and capital matter most.

Why
01
AI pressure: AWS, Azure, Google Cloud AI/GPU infrastructure. Hyperscalers pour billions into GPU capacity for the same AI infrastructure race Gcore entered with a $60M raise. Could AI do the core job? Only partly.
02
Bigger players: Cloudflare and Akamai. Cloudflare and Akamai dominate CDN and edge, and could ship EU sovereign AI inference products, narrowing Gcore's niche. Could a giant copy it? Yes, easily.
03
What protects it. A real European data center footprint and sovereignty branding, but no rule stops big clouds from copying it.
What would change this call
Gcore announces a Series B of $200M+ within 6-12 months. Shows it can fund the AI/GPU capex race against much larger rivals.
Headcount data for Q3/Q4 2026 shows further decline below 700 employees. Would indicate financial strain despite growth claims.
Cloudflare or Akamai ships an EU-jurisdiction sovereign AI-inference product. Would erase Gcore's main 'sovereign infrastructure' differentiator.
Key numbers
  • $60M Series A raised, led by Wargaming (2024-07)
  • Headcount fell 20.3%, 942 to 751 staff (2025-12)
  • 210+ points of presence, 200+ Tbps capacity (2026-07-03)
Named risks
  • Capital-starved in AI/GPU capex race against billions raised by CoreWeave and hyperscalers. Severity: high
  • Renewed EU sanctions scrutiny over historical Russia and RT distribution allegations from 2023. Severity: medium
  • Headcount decline of 20.3% from 2023 to 2025 with no priced Series B disclosed as of July 2026. Severity: medium
  • Sovereign European infrastructure positioning is not exclusive; Cloudflare, Akamai, AWS and OVHcloud can replicate it. Severity: high
  • Discrepancy between vendor-stated headcount of 600+ and independently tracked 751, raising transparency concerns. Severity: low

Questions people ask
Is Gcore profitable in 2026?
Gcore does not publish audited financials. Third party estimates put revenue around $92.8M as of 2024, with another estimate at $126M with 600 employees, but no profitability figures have been disclosed as of July 2026.
How much funding has Gcore raised?
Gcore raised a $60 million Series A in July 2024, its first external capital raise since founding in 2014, led by Wargaming with Constructor Capital and Han River Partners. No priced Series B had been disclosed as of July 2026.
Is Gcore laying off staff?
Independent tracker Revelio Labs reports Gcore headcount fell from 942 in 2023 to 751 by December 2025, a 20.3% decline, including a 6.3% year over year drop in 2025, even as active job postings rose 43.6% to 67 openings.
Could AI replace Gcore's business?
Gcore's physical network, 210+ points of presence and 200+ Tbps capacity as of July 2026, cannot be replicated by AI models. But its CDN and WAF services face commoditization as Cloudflare and Akamai bake similar AI-driven automation into their own offerings.
Who is Gcore's biggest competitor?
Gcore competes with Cloudflare and Akamai in CDN and edge security, and with CoreWeave, AWS, Azure and Google Cloud in AI and GPU infrastructure. Cloudflare processes over 10 trillion requests per month as of 2026, dwarfing Gcore's scale.
Does Gcore have ties to Russia that pose risk?
Gcore suspended Russia operations in June 2022, but Correctiv and taz reported in July 2023 that it distributed EU-sanctioned RT content until April 2023, which Gcore denies. EU sanctions on Russian tech firms continued escalating into July 2026.
