The call

Gauntlet keeps real integrations and fresh capital, but its Aave exit and shrinking headcount show curator relationships can end and costs are being cut even as rivals like Steakhouse pull ahead on assets.

Gauntlet helps cryptocurrency platforms manage risk by simulating what could go wrong with their lending pools and token holdings. Eight years of data gives it an edge, and it currently manages about 1.3 to 1.5 billion dollars in these services alongside rival Steakhouse Financial. But the business is fragile: Gauntlet lost its largest customer, Aave, in 2024 over a fee dispute, and even its closest competitor Chaos Labs lost Aave the same way two years later, proving these relationships are easy to break. The company cut its workforce nearly in half since 2024, suggesting money is tight despite receiving 125 million dollars in fresh investment. The real threat is that big Wall Street banks like Morgan Stanley and Citigroup, which are now moving into cryptocurrency, can likely build their own risk services since there is nothing legally stopping them from copying this work. Whether Gauntlet can turn its new Japanese investment into steady long-term revenue, and whether it keeps its remaining major clients as fee pressure mounts, will determine if it survives the next two years.

Why
01
AI pressure: Agentic AI risk-simulation and parameter-tuning tools. Academic work on agentic risk simulation targets the exact quant tasks Gauntlet sells, but no lab has shipped a direct DeFi-risk rival yet. Could AI do the core job? Only partly.
02
Bigger players: TradFi entrants (Morgan Stanley, Citigroup, NYSE/OKX venture). Banks moving into tokenized assets could build competing vault-curation products once regulatory clarity lands, no barrier stops them. Could a giant copy it? Yes, easily.
03
What protects it. Eight years of proprietary simulation data plus live embedded curator roles on Morpho, Aera, Drift, and Symbiotic that would take work to rip out.
What would change this call
Gauntlet loses Apollo, Coinbase, or Circle without a replacement client of similar size. Would repeat the Aave churn pattern and show client relationships aren't sticky.
Morgan Stanley or Citigroup ships an actual vault-curation or on-chain risk product within 12-18 months. Would show TradFi incumbents can replicate Gauntlet's curation role without a structural barrier.
Gauntlet announces a second layoff round before SBI's $125M shows up as disclosed revenue. Would indicate the new capital isn't converting into durable business fast enough.
Key numbers
  • $125M Series C led solely by SBI Holdings (2026-07-09)
  • $1.29B in vault assets managed (2026-05-20)
  • Headcount fell from ~90 to ~40 staff (2026-06-30)
Named risks
  • Vendor relationships with protocols are terminable, shown by Gauntlet's own 2024 Aave exit and Chaos Labs' 2026 Aave exit. Severity: high
  • Curator concentration: Gauntlet, Steakhouse and MEV Capital hold 58% of Morpho TVL, raising contagion exposure like the 2025 Stream Finance depeg's $285M in losses. Severity: high
  • Headcount fell from about 90 to about 40 amid a 15% May 2026 layoff despite fresh capital, signaling cost pressure. Severity: medium
  • Agentic AI research (2026 ACL SafeAgent, EY finding 57% of banks prioritizing AI for risk) targets the same simulation and parameter-tuning workflows Gauntlet performs. Severity: medium
  • SBI's $125M investment thesis depends on continued U.S. regulatory clarity via the GENIUS and CLARITY Acts, which could shift. Severity: low

Questions people ask
Is Gauntlet Networks profitable in 2026?
Gauntlet claimed profitability back in 2021 alongside 20x revenue growth, but no independent confirmation of profitability exists for 2026. It closed a $125M Series C on July 9, 2026 led by SBI Holdings without disclosing revenue or valuation, and cut 15% of staff in May 2026, suggesting cost pressure rather than confirmed profitability.
Could AI replace Gauntlet Networks?
Gauntlet's core work, running parameter simulations and stress-testing collateral scenarios, sits squarely in the class of tasks agentic AI is targeting; EY reported on May 28, 2026 that 57% of banks prioritize AI for risk management. No frontier AI lab has shipped a direct DeFi-risk competitor yet as of July 2026.
Who is Gauntlet Networks' biggest competitor?
Steakhouse Financial leads the DeFi risk-curator sector with about $1.53B in AUM as of Tiger Research's May 20, 2026 report, versus Gauntlet's roughly $1.29B. Chaos Labs is also a direct rival; both Chaos Labs and Gauntlet separately lost the Aave account, in April 2026 and February 2024 respectively.
Did Gauntlet Networks have layoffs?
Yes. On May 6, 2026, Gauntlet cut 30 jobs, about 15% of headcount, in what was reported as its first significant layoff, refocusing on core DeFi protocol optimization. By the July 9, 2026 Series C close, Fortune reported Gauntlet had around 40 employees, down from roughly 60 in February 2024.
Who owns Gauntlet Networks?
Gauntlet Networks is privately held and venture-backed, founded in 2018 by Tarun Chitra, Rei Chiang, and John Morrow. Its Series C, closed July 9, 2026 for $125M, was led exclusively by Tokyo-listed SBI Holdings (TOKYO:8473), with cumulative funding across all rounds reported at about $169.8M.
Did Gauntlet Networks lose Aave as a client?
Yes, Gauntlet terminated its multi-year Risk Steward relationship with Aave on February 21, 2024, citing governance disputes over fees, response times, and conflicts with rival Chaos Labs. Notably, Chaos Labs itself then exited its own three-year Aave risk engagement in April 2026.
