The call

Giordano stays profitable on a shrinking footprint while Uniqlo, Zara and H&M keep pressing on the same value-basics shelf space it built its name on.

Giordano sells basic, affordable clothes through about 1,800 stores and franchises across Asia. It is getting harder for the company to compete because Uniqlo, Zara, and H&M are much larger, have better supply chains, and already sell the same kinds of clothes in the same places. The company has a turnaround plan for 2025 to 2030, but it is just words on paper so far. What could change everything is whether their stores in China and Southeast Asia start selling more and making more money in the next year or two, which will show if the plan is actually working.

Why
01
AI pressure: Shein and Temu (AI-driven trend forecasting and dynamic pricing). Shein and Temu use AI to spot trends and price in real time, undercutting Giordano's value-basics niche online. Could AI do the core job? Only partly.
02
Bigger players: Uniqlo (Fast Retailing), Zara (Inditex), H&M. All three run bigger, vertically integrated basics chains in the same Greater China and Southeast Asia markets Giordano depends on. Could a giant copy it? Yes, easily.
03
What protects it. A roughly 1,800-store franchise and distribution network built up over decades across Asia and the Gulf.

Named risks
  • Beyond Boundaries turnaround (2025-2030) is unproven and revenue remains flat to declining as of FY2025. Severity: high
  • Structural competitive squeeze from larger, better-capitalized Uniqlo, Zara, H&M, and Shein/Temu in core value-basics segment. Severity: high
  • Governance and takeover uncertainty from Cheng family's ~24% stake and history of failed 2022 buyout and 2024 CEO ouster. Severity: medium
  • Sharp ~21% headcount reduction in 2025 may signal deeper operational strain despite reported profitability. Severity: medium
  • Macro and geopolitical sensitivity (Middle East uncertainty, Hong Kong consumer spending shifting north) flagged by management. Severity: low

Questions people ask
Is Giordano International profitable in 2025?
Yes. Giordano reported FY2025 net profit attributable to shareholders of approximately HK$217 million on revenue of HK$3,854 million, though revenue fell 1.7% year on year from HK$3,919 million in FY2024, as of December 31, 2025.
Is Giordano's revenue growing or shrinking?
Giordano's revenue has been roughly flat to declining for years: HK$3,380m (2021), HK$3,799m (2022), HK$3,873m (2023), HK$3,919m (2024), and HK$3,854m (2025), a 1.7% drop, with management calling 2025 a 'year of reset.'
Who owns Giordano International?
Giordano is publicly listed on HKEX (709) with no single controlling parent. The Cheng family, via Chow Tai Fook Group vehicles, holds about 24.1% of shares as of mid-2026, after a 2022 privatization bid at HK$1.88/share (HK$2.56 billion) collapsed for lack of acceptances.
Could AI replace Giordano International?
Unlikely for its core business. Giordano runs a physical-store and franchise network of roughly 1,800 stores across 30+ countries as of 2026, a distribution model AI does not directly substitute, though its newer e-commerce and personalization layer remains underdeveloped and exposed to AI-driven rivals.
Did Giordano International have layoffs?
Data shows a sharp headcount drop: from about 6,627 employees in March 2026 (WSJ) to 5,237 as of December 31, 2025 per StockAnalysis, a roughly 21% decrease, consistent with restructuring under the 'Beyond Boundaries' plan.
Who is Giordano International's biggest competitor?
Giordano competes in value-basics apparel against much larger, better-capitalized rivals Uniqlo (Fast Retailing), Zara (Inditex), and H&M, all already operating in its core Greater China, Southeast Asia, and GCC markets with superior scale and supply-chain integration.
