The call

GM makes money on gas trucks and software subscriptions while backing away from the all-electric bet it made a few years ago.

General Motors builds pickup trucks, SUVs, and cars, and also owns OnStar (a service that tracks and helps drivers) and Super Cruise (a self-driving helper). The company is hard to replace in gas-powered trucks because of dealer networks, financing power, and safety rules, but Tesla has taken most of the electric car market from GM, and GM actually stopped some of its electric plans instead of pushing forward. The company still makes money and pays shareholders, but the real question is whether GM can catch up to Tesla and other electric car makers, or whether it stays stuck as the leader of yesterday's gas-car world.

Why
01
AI pressure: Tesla FSD and Waymo autonomous driving. Self-driving software from Tesla and Waymo could make GM's Super Cruise look like a stopgap, not a platform. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: Tesla. Tesla holds roughly 47 to 59 percent of US EV sales while GM's Chevy brand sits near 6 percent in H1 2026. Could a giant copy it? No, they are blocked.
03
What protects it. Truck and SUV profits fund everything, plus OnStar and Super Cruise subscriptions that keep growing even as EV sales stall.
What would change this call
Q3 2026 earnings (late Oct 2026) show whether $14 to 16B EBIT guidance holds against tariff costs. Would show if GM's core truck/SUV profits can absorb tariff and EV transition pressure.
Whether GM's Chevy/Cadillac EV market share rises or falls further below Tesla's by year-end 2026. Would show if GM is stabilizing or continuing to lose ground in EVs.
Whether GM names a stable Chief AI Officer after the first departed in about 9 months. Would show if GM's AI strategy has settled or remains reactive.
Key numbers
  • Q2 2026 revenue $48.0B, beat $46.99B estimate (2026-07-21)
  • OnStar deferred revenue $6.3B, up ~50% YoY (2026-07-21)
  • Tesla ~47-59% of US EV sales vs GM's Chevy ~6% (2026-07-10)
Named risks
  • Tariff costs of $2.5-3.5 billion in 2026 could pressure raised guidance. Severity: high
  • Tariff-refund litigation exposure following Ford lawsuit as of 2026-07-15. Severity: medium
  • EV strategy reversal (Cadillac, Chevy Bolt discontinuation) risks ceding more ground to Tesla and Chinese EV makers. Severity: high
  • Continued AI-linked white-collar layoffs and chief AI officer turnover signal unsettled internal AI strategy. Severity: medium
  • USITC Section 337 patent investigation outcome could affect vehicle parts supply as of 2026-03-10. Severity: low

Questions people ask
Is GM profitable in 2026?
Yes. GM posted Q2 2026 revenue of $48.0 billion and net income of $1.3 billion, beating consensus estimates, with adjusted EPS of $3.57, up about 41% year over year, and raised full-year adjusted EBIT guidance to $14-16 billion as of 2026-07-21.
Is GM losing the EV race to Tesla?
Yes, in market share terms. Tesla holds roughly 47-59% of the US EV market through 2026, while GM's Chevy brand sits around 6% in H1 2026. GM has responded by reversing Cadillac's all-electric-by-2030 pledge and discontinuing the Bolt EV as of 2026-07-21.
Is GM cutting jobs because of AI?
Partly. GM cut 500-600 IT roles in May 2026 explicitly described as an AI-skills reallocation, part of roughly 11,000 salaried cuts since a 2022 peak of 58,000. Factory Zero also cut 1,000+ hourly workers in June-July 2026 while deploying about 50 AI-powered cobots.
Could AI replace GM's core business?
No. GM's moat is physical manufacturing, a state-protected dealer network, GM Financial's captive lending arm (Q2 2026 EBT-adjusted $1.3 billion, $125.5 billion in earning assets), and vehicle-safety certification, none of which AI-native entrants can replicate as of mid-2026.
Who is GM's biggest competitor?
Tesla, by market cap and EV dominance: Tesla's roughly $1.2-1.46 trillion valuation dwarfs GM's roughly $72-79 billion as of July 2026, and Tesla holds 47-59% of the US EV market versus GM's much smaller EV share, though GM's core truck/SUV franchise remains largely unchallenged.
Does GM still make money on gas vehicles versus EVs?
Yes, GM's core ICE truck and SUV business drives its profit, while EVs have been a drag: GM logged $10.9 billion in cumulative EV-related restructuring charges since H2 2025, prompting a pivot back to gas-powered Cadillac and Chevy models starting spring 2027.
