The call

GoStudent turned profitable by shrinking, but its own numbers say families want in-person tutoring, not the online model that raised €590M.

GoStudent runs an online tutoring marketplace and owns physical tutoring centers (Studienkreis), but the company is betting that in-person lessons are where the real money is after years of struggling with its online model. The biggest threats are Kumon, which already has tutoring centers everywhere, and free AI tools like ChatGPT and Claude that let students get homework help without paying anything, plus GoStudent's own cheap AI tutor product that undercuts its own business. The one thing that could save the company is landing fresh investment money soon, because without it and without clearing up confusion about its actual revenue numbers, the owners' stakes could become worthless within the next year.

Why
01
AI pressure: Free AI tutors like ChatGPT, Khanmigo, and school-provided AI homework help. Free AI tutors already do the cheap homework-help job GoStudent's €14.90/mo Amelia product tries to sell. Could AI do the core job? Only partly.
02
Bigger players: Kumon and other offline tutoring center networks. GoStudent's own data shows 8 of 10 families now prefer in-person tutoring, the exact model Kumon has run for decades. Could a giant copy it? Yes, easily.
03
What protects it. Physical Studienkreis centers and vetted human tutors give it something free AI chatbots and pure online rivals can't copy overnight.
What would change this call
GoStudent announces a fresh priced funding round or valuation change within 12 months. Would show whether investors still believe in the online tutoring thesis.
GoStudent formalizes a franchise program for Studienkreis-style centers in 2026. Would confirm a capital-light pivot away from the online marketplace model.
Prosus discloses an impairment or writedown on its GoStudent stake. Would indicate the lead investor sees declining equity value.

Questions people ask
Is GoStudent profitable in 2024?
GoStudent says it reached full-year Group operational profitability in 2024 with Core EBITDA over 14 million euros, a vendor-claimed, unaudited figure announced September 2, 2025, following losses of 89 million euros (2021) and 220 million euros (2022).
Has GoStudent had layoffs?
Yes. Per Revelio Labs workforce data (June 2026), headcount fell from 8,019 in 2023 to 4,554 in 2024 to 3,465 by December 2025, a 56.8% cumulative decline; job postings dropped 79.9% in 2025 to just 1,038.
Who owns GoStudent?
GoStudent is privately held and venture-backed, with investors including Prosus, SoftBank Vision Fund 2, DST Global, Tencent, Coatue and Deutsche Telekom. Prosus led its Series D (300 million euros, January 2022) that valued the company near 3 billion euros.
Could AI replace GoStudent's tutors?
CEO Felix Ohswald frames human 1:1 tutoring and Studienkreis physical centers as resistant to AI, but GoStudent's own 14.90 euro/month self-study add-on 'Amelia' (launched April 2024) directly competes with free tools like ChatGPT and Khan Academy on basic homework help.
What is GoStudent's valuation?
GoStudent was valued at roughly 3 billion euros (about 3.4-3.5 billion dollars) after its January 2022 Series D led by Prosus. No new priced round has been publicly reported since August 2023, so that valuation has not been updated for over two years as of mid-2026.
Who is GoStudent's biggest competitor?
GoStudent competes with online marketplaces like Preply and MyTutor, open platforms like Superprof, and faces pressure from offline incumbent Kumon on the hybrid center model, plus free AI tools like Khan Academy eroding its self-study tier.
