The call

GoPay just turned profitable inside a company still fighting for its independence against a much bigger Grab and an unresolved merger.

GoTo Group runs GoPay, a digital wallet and payment app with 69 million users in Indonesia. It just made its first quarterly profit, which is a real milestone, but it is fighting bigger, better-funded competitors like Grab (which is 4 to 5 times larger and backed by Uber) and Sea Group's ShopeePay, plus old-school banks that could crush it if they move fast. The biggest wild card is whether GoTo stays independent or gets forced into a merger, combined with whether it can hold onto customers when a government rule called QRIS lets people easily jump between payment apps instead of staying loyal to one.

Why
01
AI pressure: None apparent. No AI-native payments agent is named as eating GoPay yet; the pressure comes from human-run rival wallets, not algorithms. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: Grab Holdings (GrabPay). Grab is 4 to 5 times GoTo's size, runs GrabPay across Southeast Asia, and a stalled merger could end with GoTo absorbed rather than independent. Could a giant copy it? Probably.
03
What protects it. OJK fintech licensing plus GoPay's embedding inside Gojek rides and Tokopedia checkout, backed by a driver network Grab and Sea can't instantly copy in Indonesia.

Questions people ask
Is GoTo Group profitable in 2026?
Yes, GoTo posted its first-ever quarterly net profit in Q1 2026: IDR 171 billion, reversing a IDR 367 billion loss a year earlier. Revenue rose 26% YoY to IDR 5.3 trillion and core GTV surged 65% to IDR 138 trillion, per results reported 4 May 2026.
Is GoTo Group merging with Grab?
The Grab-GoTo merger remains unresolved. Talks stalled in January 2026 over Telkomsel's roughly 2% stake and regulatory concerns, and by 5 March 2026 Grab said it was not currently pursuing the deal, though Indonesia's Danantara fund reportedly kept trying to broker terms.
Who is GoTo Group's biggest competitor?
Grab Holdings is GoTo's closest rival, valued at roughly $18.5 to 21 billion versus GoTo's $4.2 to 5 billion as of 22 February 2026, competing head-on in ride-hailing, delivery, and GrabPay fintech across Indonesia.
Could AI replace GoPay's business?
GoTo's CFO credited AI strategy with lowering cost-to-serve in Q1 2026 results, but GoPay's OJK payments license, driver-network distribution, and proprietary transaction data across 69 million users form a licensing and logistics moat AI alone cannot replicate.
Who owns GoTo Group?
GoTo trades publicly as PT GoTo Gojek Tokopedia Tbk (IDX: GOTO) since its April 2022 IPO, which raised about $1.1 billion. Major backers include SoftBank, Provident Capital Partners, Peak XV, Telkomsel (about 2%), Google, Tencent, and Temasek.
Has GoTo Group had layoffs in 2026?
TikTok, which controls 75.01% of GoTo's former e-commerce unit Tokopedia, cut over 450 tech-division jobs in early July 2026, shrinking Tokopedia's workforce to roughly 10% of its pre-2024 level. GoTo's own parent headcount also edged down to 3,505 by 31 March 2026.
