The call

The audit side sits behind a legal wall AI cannot cross, while the advisory side takes the AI and cost hit that the audit side does not.

Grant Thornton does audits, tax work, and consulting for mid-market companies. Its audit business is hard to replace because only licensed CPAs can legally sign off on company financials, and AI cannot do that job or fix the legal risk. However, its consulting arm is easier for AI to handle, which is why the company laid off 800 people in the US over 18 months even though it hired globally. The big question is when its private owners will sell the firm and what that means for job security and pay for people joining now.

Why
01
AI pressure: Generative AI tools like ChatGPT Enterprise and Big Four AI copilots. AI now drafts the models, memos, and documentation that used to fill advisory billable hours, and US cuts already reflect that. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: Deloitte, PwC, EY, KPMG (the Big Four). Independence rules and cost structure keep the Big Four away from most of Grant Thornton's mid-market audit clients. Could a giant copy it? No, they are blocked.
03
What protects it. Only licensed audit partners can sign statutory opinions, a legal requirement no AI tool or algorithm can satisfy.
What would change this call
PCAOB or SEC issues a quality finding on gtap-assisted public-company audits after 2027 rollout. Would show the AI liability seal on audit is weaker than claimed.
A fourth or fifth US advisory layoff round is announced within the next year. Would show consulting-side cuts are ongoing collapse, not one-time reallocation.
New Mountain or Cinven sells their Grant Thornton stakes via fire-sale rather than IPO or structured deal. Would show PE ownership degraded value rather than building it.

  • Advisory/consulting deliverables remain exposed to generative-AI substitution absent audit-style regulatory protection. Severity: medium

Questions people ask
Is Grant Thornton profitable in 2026?
Grant Thornton's global network hit record revenue of $8.5 billion for FY2025 (ended 30 Sept 2025), up 6.1% at constant currency. Its UK arm posted £724m net revenue and roughly £147m operating profit for calendar 2024. No net loss has been reported; profitability appears healthy despite advisory-side layoffs.
Could AI replace Grant Thornton's auditors?
No. Statutory audit opinions legally require a licensed CPA/audit partner's signature, a liability seal AI cannot cross. Grant Thornton launched its own AI audit platform, gtap, on 7 May 2026 to automate workpapers and testing, but sign-off authority stays human, with public-company audit rollout planned for 2027.
Who owns Grant Thornton?
Grant Thornton International Ltd (GTIL) is a private, not-for-profit umbrella over independent national firms. Since 2024-2025, private equity took stakes in advisory arms: New Mountain Capital acquired about 60% of Grant Thornton's US advisory business (closed May 2024), and Cinven bought roughly 60% of Grant Thornton UK's advisory business (completed April 2025).
Is Grant Thornton laying off employees?
Yes, in the US specifically: about 350 employees cut in May 2024, 150 more in November 2024, and 300 more in May 2025, roughly 800 people over 18 months, concentrated in advisory and tax amid falling consulting demand, even as global network headcount grew about 5.3% to roughly 80,000 by December 2025.
Who is Grant Thornton's biggest competitor?
Above it sit the Big Four (Deloitte, PwC, EY, KPMG), who dominate large-cap audit but are structurally blocked from much mid-market audit work by auditor-independence and rotation rules. At its own tier, Grant Thornton competes with BDO, RSM, Baker Tilly, Crowe, and Forvis Mazars for mid-market clients.
Is Grant Thornton a safe firm to join in 2026?
It depends on the division: audit/assurance (about 45% of FY2025 revenue, growing 7.9%) is protected by regulatory liability rules, while advisory/consulting has seen three US layoff rounds since 2024 totaling roughly 800 people. Grant Thornton UK is meanwhile adding up to 160 new equity partners by end-2027.
