The call

Granules keeps growing on commodity APIs and a complex-generics pivot, but nine US product approvals sit frozen until Gagillapur clears FDA re-inspection.

Granules India makes generic medications and sells them to the US and other markets. The company has real advantages: it has gotten 103 FDA approvals for its drugs, and it makes the actual pills in factories that competitors cannot easily replicate or replace. However, the US FDA issued a serious warning letter in February 2025 about its main factory in Gagillapur, which has frozen 9 new drug approvals and could block sales if not fixed quickly. The one thing that changes everything is whether the FDA inspection at that factory passes in 2026. If it does, the company stays on track; if it fails, the company faces a crisis.

Why
01
AI pressure: None apparent. AI drug-discovery tools target new molecules, not off-patent generics Granules makes; little direct effect either way. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: Sun Pharma, Aurobindo Pharma, Teva, Sandoz. Bigger generic and API makers chase the same commodity molecules, like paracetamol and metformin, pressuring prices Granules can charge. Could a giant copy it? Probably.
03
What protects it. Its own FDA-approved ANDA filings, two First-to-File exclusivities, and roughly 30% of world paracetamol supply keep volume sticky.
What would change this call
FDA re-inspection of Gagillapur facility occurs and outcome is published. Shows whether the 9 frozen US approvals unfreeze or the compliance overhang worsens.
Ascelis Peptides/CDMO reports quarterly PAT status ahead of FY27 target. Shows whether the CDMO pivot is closing losses or continuing to bleed cash.
Q2 FY27 results (Oct-Nov 2026) show North America revenue share and margin trend. Shows whether US pricing pressure or tariffs are compressing margins.
Key numbers
  • Q1 FY27 PAT up 60% YoY to ₹1,800 million (2026-06-30)
  • North America made up 72-79% of quarterly revenue (2026-03-31)
  • Complex generics rose from 31% to 43% of dosage revenue (2026-03-31)
Named risks
  • Gagillapur facility remains under FDA Warning Letter since Feb 2025, blocking 9 US product approvals. Severity: high
  • Heavy North America revenue concentration (72-79%) exposes Granules to US generic pricing or tariff shocks. Severity: medium
  • Ascelis CDMO/peptide unit still loss-making, with FY2027 breakeven target unproven. Severity: medium
  • Late entry into CDMO/peptides versus faster-growing rivals Laurus Labs and Piramal Pharma. Severity: medium

Questions people ask
Is Granules India profitable in 2026?
Yes. Granules India reported FY2025-26 (year ended March 2026) consolidated PAT of ₹5,950 million, up 19% YoY, on revenue of ₹53,656 million (up 20% YoY) and a 65.0% gross margin, per its July 2026 earnings summary.
What is Granules India's biggest current risk?
An unresolved FDA Warning Letter issued February 26, 2025 for its flagship Gagillapur facility, citing CGMP violations, which is blocking nine pending US product approvals until re-inspection occurs; no re-inspection date was set as of July 2026.
Who owns Granules India?
Granules India is publicly listed on the BSE and NSE. Promoter family (led by Dr. Krishna Prasad Chigurupati) held 38.02% as of June 2026, down from 41-42% in FY2022, with FIIs at 17.5% and DIIs at 16.1%.
Can AI replace Granules India's manufacturing business?
No. Granules relies on physical, regulated manufacturing (10 plants, 39 billion finished-dosage units/year) and 153 global regulatory filings with 103 approvals. It is deploying agentic AI internally for quality/deviation monitoring, per a July 2026 interview, but this is a tool, not displacement.
Who is Granules India's biggest competitor?
Granules competes with commodity API and generics makers Sun Pharmaceutical, Aurobindo Pharma, Teva, and Sandoz, plus Indian CDMO/generics peers Laurus Labs, Divi's Laboratories, Piramal Pharma, and Natco Pharma, none of which structurally bar Granules from the market.
Is Granules India's new peptide CDMO business (Ascelis) working?
Not yet profitable. Ascelis Peptides/Senn Chemicals generated ₹1,593 million in FY26 revenue but posted a roughly ₹24.8 crore EBITDA loss in Q3 FY26; the company targets annual PAT-positivity for the unit in FY2027.
