Greater Bay Technology
GAC-spun-off maker of ultra-fast-charging EV batteries and solid-state cell prototypes.
GBT ships real fast-charging batteries today, but its anchor customer is building its own battery arm while CATL and BYD outscale it on every commodity metric.
Greater Bay Technology runs a real battery factory in China that makes fast-charging batteries for GAC cars. But it is getting harder to protect what it does: CATL and BYD are much bigger competitors already shipping their own fast-charging batteries, and they can copy what GBT does without any penalty. Plus, GBT's main customer GAC just cut ties, sold its stake down to 15.6%, and started making its own batteries instead, which means GBT could lose its biggest orders. The one thing that might turn this around is if GBT's solid-state batteries (a newer, better type) actually get made at large scale by late 2026 and other car companies besides GAC want to use them.
Independent, verified solid-state test results plus a non-GAC automaker contract by late 2026. Would show GBT can diversify beyond its shrinking GAC relationship.
CATL or BYD announce mass-production solid-state or faster-charging cells before 2027. Would show the giants closing GBT's technical lead before it scales.
- 8 GWh/year plant capacity, $547M capex
- GAC stake cut to indirect ~15.6%
- GAC launches separate $1.59B battery unit
- 8 GWh capacity is a fraction of CATL/BYD's hundreds of GWh, a structural cost disadvantage.
- GAC's new in-house battery entity (RMB10.9B, Nov 2025) could absorb GBT's flagship Aion/Hyptec platforms.
- Solid-state and range claims (621-mile, no liquid electrolyte) remain unverified by independent testing.
- No non-GAC automaker has publicly committed to GBT's solid-state cells as of mid 2026.
- Valuation is ambiguous: only $157M in disclosed primary funding versus a $1.26B aggregator estimate.
| Rival | Direction | Evidence |
|---|---|---|
| CATL | gaining on | CATL's Shenxing line shipped a 6-minute fast-charge LFP cell reported April 2026, at hundreds of GWh scale |
| BYD | gaining on | BYD Blade and Super e-Platform compete directly in fast-charging with vastly greater manufacturing scale as of 2026 |
| GAC Group (former backer) | losing to | GAC cut its stake to ~15.6% in Dec 2024, then funded its own $1.59B in-house battery unit in Nov 2025 |
- Is Greater Bay Technology profitable in 2026?
- No public revenue figures have been disclosed. Third parties describe it as generating revenue, but GBT has released no profit or sales numbers. Its only confirmed capital events are a $150M Series A in May 2022 and a December 2024 stake sale valuing part of the company near $970M, not audited financials.
- Who owns Greater Bay Technology now that GAC has sold its stake?
- GAC Group cut its stake to an indirect ~15.6% in December 2024, selling 18.82% for about RMB1.33 billion ($183M) to GAC Industry and giving up board and management nomination rights. GBT remains privately held with no confirmed majority owner disclosed as of mid 2026.
- Could CATL or BYD replace Greater Bay Technology's fast-charging battery tech?
- Yes, that risk is structural. CATL's Shenxing line and BYD's Blade/Super e-Platform already ship fast-charging cells at hundreds of GWh scale, versus GBT's single 8 GWh plant opened October 2023. Neither giant faces a legal or channel barrier to copying GBT's charging approach.
- Is Greater Bay Technology's solid-state battery breakthrough verified?
- Not independently. As of April 2026 GBT reported producing A-sample all-solid-state cells and targeted GWh-scale output by late 2026, but no independent lab test (UN38.3/GB/T) or non-GAC automaker production commitment has confirmed the claimed 621-mile range or performance.
- What is Greater Bay Technology's biggest competitor?
- CATL and BYD, China's dominant battery makers, operating at hundreds of GWh of capacity versus GBT's 8 GWh Nansha plant opened in October 2023. Both are already shipping fast-charging cells and pursuing solid-state roadmaps that could match or outpace GBT's technology.
- Did GAC Group start its own battery company to compete with Greater Bay Technology?
- Yes. In November 2025 GAC Group announced a new in-house battery entity capitalized at RMB10.9 billion (about $1.59B), owned 51% by GAC AION, 40% by GAC Motor, and 9% by GAC Business, months after cutting its GBT stake to ~15.6% in December 2024.
