Halan
Egyptian non-bank lender and super-app serving unbanked and thin-file borrowers.
Halan leads Egyptian microfinance on licenses and data, but a possible IPO priced below its private valuation and a bank-backed rival lender are the pressures to watch.
Halan lends small amounts to everyday people in Egypt through its own app and field staff, mostly outside the traditional bank system. It is hard to copy because it has government licenses, its own credit-scoring system built on years of loan data, and thousands of agents on the ground, but Fawry (a big payments company) is starting a competing lending business with even wider reach, and Egypt's economic swings in currency and interest rates could hurt loan repayment and tank the company's value faster than any competitor could. The real test arrives in the next year: if Egypt's central bank cuts interest rates as the CEO expects, Halan's loan book and profits could jump, but if the Egyptian pound drops or rates stay high instead, the company could struggle to hit growth targets and lose half its value before or after its planned stock offering in 2026.
Fawry Tamweelak reports customer or loan-book growth in thin-file consumer lending. Would show a same-industry rival actually pulling share from MNT-Halan.
Egyptian pound or interest-rate shock within 12 months. Would test MNT-Halan's NPL trajectory and its CEO's easing-dependent growth targets.
- ~25% share of Egypt's microfinance market
- Gross loan book over $1.7B
- $1.4B valuation in latest growth round
- Egyptian pound/interest-rate shock could hit loan-book performance and dollar equity value.
- Growth targets tied to anticipated monetary easing that has not yet materialized as of mid-2026.
- Exploratory Egypt-unit IPO valuation ($900M-$1B) sits below group's $1.4B valuation, signaling compression risk.
- Loan-book and revenue figures are founder-stated and unaudited, inconsistent across sources.
- Fawry's Tamweelak lending arm has larger distribution footprint and could erode thin-file lending share.
| Rival | Direction | Evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Fawry | contesting | Fawry Microfinance/Tamweelak live with FRA approval and EBRD credit line as of May 2026, has not yet taken material Halan share |
| valU | contesting | EGX-listed BNPL/consumer finance rival partnered with Amazon Egypt, per July 2025 competitive landscape analysis |
| Blnk | gaining on | Digital lender raised $37.1M combined debt/equity in H1 2026, among top African fintech raises |
| Traditional banks (CIB, QNB Egypt) | losing to | Incumbent banks show comparatively lower NPL ratios than Halan's lending book, per December 2025 AGBI analysis |
- Is Halan (MNT-Halan) profitable?
- No audited profit figures are public. Founder Mounir Nakhla told AGBI in June 2025 that revenue has grown about 25% annually from 2021-2024 and is reaching hundreds of millions of dollars, but no net income or profitability figure has been disclosed.
- Could AI replace Halan's lending business?
- Unlikely on its own. Halan runs a proprietary in-house credit engine using super-app transactional data and holds Egyptian FRA and central bank lending licenses; a generic AI model cannot hold a lending license or run field agents in Egypt's cash economy, as described in an October 2025 WEF piece.
- Who is Halan's biggest competitor?
- Fawry, Egypt's largest listed payments firm valued around $1.2B, now runs a live lending arm called Fawry Microfinance/Tamweelak backed by an EBRD credit line and FRA approval, per a May 2026 competitive analysis, though it has not yet taken material share from Halan.
- Is Halan going public?
- MNT-Halan is exploring an IPO of its Egyptian unit on the Egyptian Exchange, targeting a $900M-$1B valuation with Citigroup and EFG Hermes advising, per PYMNTS reporting from June 24, 2026. No final decision was confirmed as of that date.
- How big is Halan's loan book?
- As of June 12, 2026, Finovate reported MNT-Halan's gross loan book exceeded $1.7B, with cumulative disbursements over $15.5B since 2018 and more than 8 million customers served globally.
- Who owns Halan / MNT-Halan?
- MNT-Halan is privately held. In June 2026, Al Ahly Capital, the investment arm of the National Bank of Egypt, led a growth round valuing the company at $1.4B, marking the first time a commercial bank took an equity stake in the company.
