The call

Handshake's old campus business is stalling while its new AI labeling arm races unproven against better-funded rivals for the same experts.

Handshake helps colleges match students with jobs and has recently started labeling data for AI companies, paying students and PhD holders to do the work. The old recruiting business is barely growing and shrinking through layoffs, but the new labeling side is scaling quickly by tapping millions of students and university connections that competitors like Scale AI and Mercor don't easily have. The big question is whether AI companies will keep paying humans to label data or switch to computer-generated training data instead, which would shrink the whole market and make Handshake's competitive edge disappear.

Why
01
AI pressure: Scale AI, Mercor. Rivals chase the same PhD labelers with more funding, and labs may shift to synthetic data, shrinking the whole labeling category. Could AI do the core job? Only partly.
02
Bigger players: LinkedIn (Microsoft). LinkedIn keeps deepening its grip on early-career hiring while Handshake's core campus business grows just 6% a year. Could a giant copy it? Probably.
03
What protects it. Access to 20-25 million students and 1,600 university partnerships that rivals cannot easily replicate.
What would change this call
Handshake announces a new priced funding round at $8B+ valuation. Would confirm AI revenue claims and validate rapid growth story.
A major frontier AI lab publicly shifts spend to synthetic data or drops human labeling vendors. Would show the labeling category itself is shrinking, hurting Handshake and rivals alike.
Handshake discloses multi-year contracts with frontier labs or reports share gains versus Mercor and Scale AI. Would show Handshake pulling ahead rather than trailing as a smaller player.
Key numbers
  • Core recruiting revenue ~$190M, up 6% YoY (2026)
  • AI labeling business ~$1B gross, ~$300M net annualized (2026)
  • No priced funding round since $200M raise in Jan 2022 (2026-07)
Named risks
  • Human data-labeling category could compress as synthetic data and automated QA mature. Severity: high
  • No priced funding round since January 2022 despite claimed hypergrowth, valuation unverified. Severity: medium
  • Client concentration among ~8 frontier AI labs; a breach like Mercor's March 2026 incident could trigger contract loss. Severity: high
  • Legacy campus recruiting postings declining 15%+ YoY, pressuring the older revenue base. Severity: medium
  • Integration risk from three acquisitions (Cleanlab, Taro, Uplimit) within five months of 2026. Severity: low

Questions people ask
Is Handshake profitable in 2026?
Handshake has not disclosed audited profitability. Estimates put gross annualized revenue near 1.1B as of April 2026, but after 60 to 70 percent contractor payouts on its AI labeling business, net revenue is closer to 450M a year, and no profit figures have been made public.
Did Handshake have layoffs?
Yes. In October 2025 Handshake laid off roughly 96 to 100 people, about 15 percent of its roughly 650 person US core staff, as CEO Garrett Lord publicly reframed the company around AI data labeling in what he called a re-founding.
Could AI replace Handshake's core business?
Handshake's core campus job board faces AI-driven automation risk in matching and outreach, and its own research shows full-time early-talent postings down about 15 percent YoY through 2025, though its 20 to 25 million student network and 1,600-plus university partnerships remain a distribution moat AI tools can't easily replicate.
Who is Handshake's biggest competitor?
In its newer, faster-growing AI data-labeling business, Handshake competes against much larger rivals: Mercor crossed 1B annualized gross revenue (up 897 percent YoY) at a 10B valuation in October 2025, and Scale AI reached roughly 1.5B revenue and a 29B implied valuation after Meta's stake buy.
Is it safe to take a job at Handshake right now?
Mixed. Handshake laid off 15 percent of core staff in October 2025 while pivoting to AI labeling, has not closed a priced funding round since January 2022 despite claiming hypergrowth, and its AI division competes against better-funded rivals like Mercor and Scale AI for the same frontier-lab budgets.
Who owns Handshake?
Handshake is a private, venture-backed company with no parent, founded in 2014 by Garrett Lord, Ben Christensen and Scott Ringwelski. Its last priced round was a 200M Series F in January 2022 led by Coatue Management and Valiant Peregrine Fund at a 3.5B valuation.
