The call

Hikvision keeps printing cash in China while its Western business waits on an FCC ruling that could shut US market access.

Hikvision makes security cameras and surveillance systems, mostly sold in China where it controls about 59% of the market and is partly owned by the Chinese government. The company makes huge profits and pays big dividends, but it faces a serious problem in the West: the US and UK are moving to ban its equipment from their markets for national security reasons, with major rulings expected by mid-2026. The one thing that could change this story is if Hikvision's newer robotics and thermal-imaging businesses (HikRobot, HikMicro) grow fast enough to make up for a collapse in US sales, but so far the company's total sales are basically flat and these new units are still small.

Why
01
AI pressure: Cloud computer-vision APIs from hyperscalers (AWS, Google, Azure) and Dahua's Xinghan model. Generic cloud AI vision APIs could commoditize the analytics layer Hikvision bundles into its cameras and software. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: Dahua Technology. Dahua shipped its own Xinghan AI model in Sep 2025, matching Hikvision inside the protected China market they both dominate. Could a giant copy it? No, they are blocked.
03
What protects it. State ownership (~39%), 100,000+ channel partners, and ~59% combined China market share with Dahua and Uniview lock in demand.
What would change this call
FCC issues final ruling on retroactive revocation of Hikvision equipment authorizations. Would show whether Hikvision's US institutional/commercial business can legally continue operating.
UK reports further sensitive-site removals beyond Surrey County Council disclosure. Would show whether UK public-sector customers keep exiting Hikvision equipment.
Hikvision's innovative-business units (HikRobot, HikMicro, HikAuto) report >30% of revenue with real growth in FY2026. Would show whether non-video units are offsetting flat core video revenue and Western losses.

Questions people ask
Is Hikvision profitable in 2026?
Yes. Hikvision reported FY2025 net profit of RMB 14.20bn (about $1.99B), up 18.52% year over year, on revenue of RMB 92.51bn ($12.95B) that was essentially flat (+0.01%), per results released 2026-04-27.
Is Hikvision banned in the US?
Not fully, but close. On 2026-03-27 the FCC proposed retroactively revoking prior equipment authorizations for Covered List firms including Hikvision; the comment period closed 2026-05-06 and Hikvision's judicial-review petition is still pending as of mid 2026.
Who owns Hikvision?
China Electronics Technology HIK Group, a state owned entity under SASAC's parent conglomerate, holds roughly 38.9 to 39.6% of shares; vice chairman Gong Hongjia is the largest individual shareholder at about 10 to 13%, per Wikipedia.
Who is Hikvision's biggest competitor?
Dahua Technology, its closest Chinese rival, which shipped a comparable foundation model called Xinghan in September 2025. Hikvision, Dahua and Uniview together held about 58.85% of China's video surveillance market in 2025.
Could AI replace Hikvision?
Unlikely soon. Hikvision embeds its own Guanlan foundation models (launched April 2025) directly into cameras and NVRs, and its moat rests on tens of millions of deployed devices and proprietary real world training data, not on software AI alone.
Is Hikvision laying off employees?
Headcount is edging down. Revelio Labs estimates 58,454 employees as of December 2025, down 2.1% year over year; StockAnalysis.com puts it at 57,202, down 4.17%, consistent with a maturing, margin focused phase.
