The call

HPE is profitable and riding AI-server demand, but thinner margins, Dell's server share, and a pending DOJ-forced Mist AI license auction all bear watching.

HPE makes the computers and networking gear that power corporate data centers and cloud companies. Right now, it is riding a wave of spending on AI infrastructure, but that wave is not really hard to ride: Dell already owns most of the server market with bigger scale and lower prices, and Cisco owns most wireless networking through its recent purchase of Juniper. The one thing that could change everything is whether HPE can prove its AI servers and networking actually work better than competitors, not just cheaper or the same, and whether the company keeps the networking business it is being forced to sell off by regulators.

Why
01
AI pressure: None apparent. AI capex is feeding HPE now via a $5B server backlog, but commodity AI-server pricing is squeezing margins. Could AI do the core job? Only partly.
02
Bigger players: Dell Technologies. Dell holds 17-20% server share to HPE's 5.5-15%, competing hard for the same AI-server deals HPE is chasing. Could a giant copy it? Probably.
03
What protects it. GreenLake subscription lock-in, Cray supercomputing niche, and post-Juniper networking scale give HPE sticky, diversified revenue.
What would change this call
Buyer/licensee named for DOJ-mandated Instant On divestiture and Mist AI Ops source-code auction. Shows whether a rival gains access to HPE's own networking AI technology.
HPE Q3 FY2026 earnings print (~Sept 1, 2026) on AI-server margins and revenue growth rate. Shows whether 40% growth and margin pressure can coexist or growth is slowing.
Dell or Supermicro reporting server/AI-infrastructure market share gains in coming quarterly results. Shows whether HPE is losing booked backlog to rivals, not just new deals.
Key numbers
  • $5B AI systems backlog (2026-01-31)

Questions people ask
Is HPE (Hewlett Packard Enterprise) profitable?
Yes. HPE reported FY2024 (ended Oct 31, 2024) revenue of about $30.1 billion and net income of $2.55 billion with roughly 61,000 employees. More recently, Q2 FY2026 (ended April 30, 2026) revenue hit $10.7 billion, up about 40% year over year, beating consensus estimates.
Did HPE have layoffs recently?
Yes. In March 2025 HPE announced cutting about 3,000 roles, roughly 5% of staff (2,500 direct layoffs plus 500 attrition), to save $350 million, citing server margin pressure and tariff impacts. Headcount fell to about 59,000 by April 2025, the lowest since HPE's 2015 creation.
Who is HPE's biggest competitor?
Dell Technologies leads in servers, holding roughly 17-20% market share versus HPE's 5.5-15% as of January 2026. In networking, Cisco held about 48% of enterprise WLAN share in 2024 versus HPE plus Juniper's combined 22-26%, per DOJ filings tied to HPE's Juniper acquisition.
Could AI replace HPE's business?
No, AI is currently a demand tailwind, not a replacement threat. HPE cited a $5 billion AI systems backlog in its Q1 FY2026 earnings (Jan 31, 2026) and $4.2 billion in Cloud and AI segment server revenue, driven by enterprise and sovereign AI customers.
Did HPE acquire Juniper Networks?
Yes, HPE closed a $14 billion acquisition of Juniper Networks on July 2, 2025. Networking now makes up more than 50% of HPE's operating income post-acquisition, though DOJ required HPE to divest its Instant On WLAN unit and auction a license to Juniper's Mist AI Ops source code.
What is HPE's market capitalization?
HPE's market capitalization was approximately $65 billion as of July 9, 2026, following a 9.4% stock price jump after Q2 FY2026 results beat consensus revenue and EPS estimates by 9.6% and 49% respectively.
