Hume AI
Hume AI builds emotion-aware voice AI and now sells emotion data to AI labs.
Its founder now works for its biggest potential customer, and the $100M pivot rests on contracts nobody outside the company has confirmed.
Hume AI built software that understands emotions in people's voices and generates emotional-sounding speech. This used to be rare, but now OpenAI, Google, and ElevenLabs are all shipping similar features built into their own products, making Hume's original technology less special. The company's founder and top engineers left for Google DeepMind in early 2026 with a non-exclusive license to Hume's technology, which looks like Google bought the people more than the company itself. Hume is now trying to sell emotion data and testing tools to AI labs instead, but this is brand new (only six months old), creates conflicts of interest (the AI labs are also their competitors), and relies on data that the person who built it best now works for Google. The one thing that could save the company is if it can land real, long-term contracts with AI labs to license its emotion-analysis tools, but so far those deals have not been publicly announced or confirmed.
Kairos/Real World VoiceEQ converts private-preview labs into paying, renewing customers outside Google/OpenAI. Would show the data/eval business can survive without its biggest predators as customers.
Ettinger-led team ships a new frontier voice model that gains market share versus ElevenLabs or GPT-Live. Would show Hume retained enough talent and tech to compete directly again.

- Is Hume AI still an independent company after the Google deal?
- Yes, but weakened. In January 2026, Google DeepMind hired founder-CEO Alan Cowen and about 7 senior engineers via a non-exclusive tech licensing deal. Hume continues operating under new CEO Andrew Ettinger, pivoting to selling voice-data and evaluation infrastructure to AI labs, as of July 2026.
- Is Hume AI profitable in 2026?
- No independent confirmation of profitability. New CEO Andrew Ettinger said in January 2026 Hume is on track for over $100M revenue in 2026, but this is an unaudited company projection, not confirmed by disclosed customer contracts as of July 2026.
- Could OpenAI or Google replace Hume AI's voice product?
- Largely yes. OpenAI's GPT-4o-mini-tts and GPT-Live already ship real-time emotional tone detection, and Google DeepMind directly absorbed Hume's founder and team in January 2026 to build emotion features into Gemini Live, per TechCrunch, January 23, 2026.
- Who is Hume AI's biggest competitor?
- ElevenLabs, which held roughly 98 percent of mid-market voice-AI spend and was valued at 11 billion dollars after a raise in February 2026, per a market analysis published April 20, 2026. OpenAI and Google Gemini Live also compete directly on emotion-aware voice.
- Who owns Hume AI?
- Hume AI remains privately held and VC-backed, having raised roughly 50 million dollars in a Series B led by EQT Ventures announced March 27, 2024, at a reported valuation near 219 million dollars. It is not owned by Google despite the January 2026 licensing deal.
- What happened to Hume AI's founder Alan Cowen?
- Alan Cowen, Hume AI's founder-CEO, joined Google DeepMind in a non-exclusive technology licensing and acqui-hire arrangement announced January 22 to 23, 2026, taking roughly 7 senior engineers with him to work on Gemini's voice and emotion features.
