Interswitch
Nigerian payments switch running Verve cards, POS rails, and bank/government processing.
Interswitch runs rails Nigeria depends on, but the card scheme paying its bills is fighting a routing war it has not yet won.
Interswitch runs Nigeria's main payment system that banks and the government use to move money, a 24-year-old network that is hard to replace because it is regulated and deeply wired into the country's financial system. But its card business, Verve, which makes up 40 percent of the money the company earns, is under attack from rivals like Paystack and Flutterwave who are threatening to stop using it, and almost all the company's revenue comes from Nigeria, which means currency swings and government rule changes can hurt it badly. Whether Interswitch keeps its value depends almost entirely on whether Verve can settle its dispute with these rivals in the next six months, because losing that business would be very damaging.
Paystack/Flutterwave/POS agents follow through on routing boycott threats. Would confirm active customer defection from Verve's rails.
Growth reported in Interswitch's non-Verve, non-Nigeria businesses (tax e-invoicing, banking rails). Would show reduced dependence on the disputed Verve product and single-country risk.
- Verve drives ~40% of group revenue
- Nigeria is over 90% of total revenue
- FY2025 revenue ₦137.5bn, up 50% YoY
- Verve routing dispute with Paystack, Flutterwave, and POS agents unresolved as of July 2026, threatens ~40% of revenue.
- Nigeria contributed over 90% of FY2025 revenue, exposing company to currency and single-market regulatory shocks.
- New CBN rules for fintechs rolling out March to June 2026 raise compliance and capital burdens.
- IPO deferred since 2016 with no confirmed date, leaving equity holders without a clear liquidity path.

| Visa/Mastercard | contesting | Visa invested ~20% for ~$200M in Nov 2019 rather than compete on domestic routing |

- Is Interswitch profitable in 2026?
- Yes. For the fiscal year ended March 2025, Interswitch reported pre-tax profit of ₦23 billion and after-tax profit of ₦14.7 billion, reversing a prior-year loss of roughly ₦1.6-1.7 billion, on revenue of ₦137.5 billion, up 50% year on year.
- Who owns Interswitch?
- Interswitch is privately held. Helios Investment Partners took a majority ~67% stake in 2010, Visa bought a minority ~20% stake for about $200 million in November 2019 valuing the company at $1 billion, and LeapFrog and Tana Africa Capital invested roughly $110 million in May 2022.
- Is Interswitch's Verve card scheme in trouble?
- As of late May 2026, Paystack, Flutterwave, and Nigerian POS agents threatened to suspend Verve card transactions over alleged anti-competitive routing rules. Verve drives nearly 40% of group revenue and the dispute remains unresolved as of late July 2026.
- Could AI replace Interswitch?
- Unlikely for its core business. Interswitch's switching and settlement rail is a CBN-licensed regulated infrastructure with decades of bank integrations. It is buying AI as a feature, deploying ACI's Proactive Risk Manager fraud platform in July 2025 under a CBN directive, rather than being displaced by it.
- Is Interswitch going public soon?
- No confirmed date. Interswitch has deferred a planned London/Lagos dual listing since first announcing intent in 2016. As of 2026 it instead issued a ₦23 billion bond on the Nigerian Stock Exchange rather than pursuing the long-awaited IPO.
- How dependent is Interswitch on Nigeria?
- Very dependent. Nigeria contributed over 90% of Interswitch's total group revenue in the fiscal year ended March 2025, with the remainder from Mauritius, the UK, Kenya, and Uganda, exposing the company to naira volatility and single-market regulatory risk.
