Island
Island builds a browser companies deploy to control and secure work applications.
Island has real customers and real money, but Microsoft is now shipping the same controls for free inside Edge, and the next year decides if lock-in outruns the bundle.
Island sells special browser software that companies use to keep their employees safe online and follow rules. It works well for banks and other large companies that need strict control. However, Microsoft just released Edge for Business with many of the same safety features, and Palo Alto owns Talon which does similar things, so Island is no longer the only choice. Island is betting its future on helping companies control artificial intelligence tools, but it has not yet proven this new direction makes real money.
Island receives FedRAMP High authorization. Would unlock federal government deals and lock in a segment less reachable by Microsoft/Palo Alto bundles.
Island names a paying reference customer for its Enterprise AI governance product by Q2 2027. Confirms the AI-governance pivot is generating real revenue, not just messaging.
- $4.8-5B valuation on $250M Series E
- ~450 enterprise customers, 7 of top 10 banks
- Headcount grew to 1,257 by mid-2026
- Microsoft bundling DLP/watermarking into Edge for Business erodes Island's differentiation.
- No new priced funding round since March 2025 despite continued platform expansion spend.
- Amazon v. Perplexity litigation (argued June 11, 2026) could reshape legal rules for AI agent/browser access.
- Rapid pivot to full Enterprise Platform (browser, desktop, SASE, AI) raises execution risk.
- Recurring minor service outages (login, policy-apply, Secure Viewer) through 2026.
| Rival | Direction | Evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Microsoft (Edge for Business) | gaining on | Shipped competing DLP, watermarking, clipboard controls and Purview AI-DLP at Ignite, Nov 18, 2025 |
| Palo Alto Networks (Prisma Access Browser) | gaining on | Acquired rival Talon in Nov 2023, integrated into Prisma SASE suite |
| Netskope (One Enterprise Browser) | contesting | Named as direct enterprise browser alternative in 2026 comparison guides |
| OpenAI Atlas / Perplexity Comet (AI browsers) | contesting | Island launched governance extension for Atlas/Comet in March 2026 rather than compete head-on |
- Is Island profitable in 2026?
- Island does not disclose audited revenue or profitability. As of March 26, 2025 it reported ARR 'more than doubling annually' since 2022 and ~450 customers, but this is a vendor-claimed figure, not independently verified profit data.
- Who owns Island, the enterprise browser company?
- Island is privately held and venture-backed, not owned by any parent company. Its Series E closed March 26, 2025 at $250M and a $4.8 to 5B valuation, led by Coatue, with investors including Sequoia, Insight Partners, and J.P. Morgan Growth Equity (joined July 14, 2025).
- What is Island worth as of 2025?
- Island was valued at roughly $4.8 to 5 billion after its $250M Series E round closed on March 26, 2025, led by Coatue Management. J.P. Morgan Growth Equity joined as a strategic investor at the ~$5B mark on July 14, 2025.
- Could AI browsers like Atlas or Comet replace Island's enterprise browser?
- Not directly yet. Island pivoted in March 2026 to sell governance over AI browsers rather than compete with them, launching an 'Island Extension' to apply enterprise DLP controls on top of OpenAI's Atlas and Perplexity's Comet, positioning itself as the compliance layer AI browsers lack.
- Who is Island's biggest competitor?
- Microsoft is Island's most structurally dangerous rival: Edge for Business shipped competing DLP, watermarking, and clipboard controls plus Purview AI-DLP at Ignite on November 18, 2025. Palo Alto Networks also competes via its 2023 Talon acquisition, now folded into Prisma Access.
- Is Island a safe company to join right now?
- Headcount has grown fast, from about 538 employees in July 2024 to roughly 1,257 by June 2026 per Crustdata, and the company held over $530M cash as of March 2025. No layoffs are reported, but no new funding round has closed since March 2025.
