The call

Isomorphic has the money and the pharma deals but no dosed patient yet, while a rival AI drug company already has human efficacy data in hand.

Isomorphic Labs uses artificial intelligence to design new medicines, backed by Google's money and talent from the team that created AlphaFold. The company has signed major deals with pharmaceutical companies worth billions of dollars in potential payments, but the entire bet depends on one thing no one has proven yet: that AI-designed drugs actually work when given to real patients. A rival company called Insilico Medicine already showed positive results in human testing in 2025, while Isomorphic has not yet started testing its first drug in people (the company delayed this milestone from the end of 2025 to the end of 2026). If Isomorphic misses the delayed deadline again or if competitors prove their AI drugs work first, the company's sky-high value and partnerships could come under serious pressure.

Why
01
AI pressure: Insilico Medicine. Insilico already posted Phase IIa efficacy for an AI-designed drug and moved to Phase III, ahead of Isomorphic's first human dose. Could AI do the core job? Only partly.
02
Bigger players: Roche, Sanofi, Bayer building in-house AI drug discovery. Roche put $3B into Recursion, Sanofi partnered with Formation Bio, Bayer backed Recursion too, all racing the same AI-drug-design bet Isomorphic runs alone. Could a giant copy it? No, they are blocked.
03
What protects it. Exclusive Lilly, Novartis and J&J deals worth over $3B in milestones, plus AlphaFold lineage talent that is hard to hire away.
What would change this call
Isomorphic dosing its first human patient by end of 2026. Shows whether the second timeline slip becomes a credibility problem or is resolved.
Insilico Medicine's rentosertib Phase III readout results. Tests industry-wide whether AI-designed drugs work clinically, ahead of Isomorphic's own proof.
Whether Lilly, Novartis, or J&J renew or expand their Isomorphic collaborations. Shows whether pharma partners see genuine progress or are stepping back.
Key numbers
  • $2.1B Series B raised, led by Thrive Capital (2026-05-12)
  • Over $3B in pharma milestone deals (Lilly, Novartis, J&J) (2026-01-20)
  • No patient dosed yet in any Isomorphic trial (2026-05-13)
Named risks
  • First-in-human trial already slipped once (end-2025 to end-2026); a second slip would hurt credibility. Severity: high
  • No AI-designed drug has received FDA approval industry-wide as of mid-2026, leaving the core thesis unproven. Severity: high
  • Insilico Medicine is ahead clinically, undermining Isomorphic's claim to be the leading proof point for AI drug discovery. Severity: medium
  • Big pharma partners (Roche, Sanofi, Bayer) building or acquiring in-house AI capability could reduce reliance on Isomorphic. Severity: medium
  • Valuation and headcount figures are undisclosed and conflicting across sources, limiting external accountability. Severity: low

Questions people ask
Is Isomorphic Labs profitable in 2026?
No. Isomorphic Labs does not disclose revenue and has not dosed a single patient as of mid-2026. It relies on capital raises, including a $2.1 billion Series B closed May 12, 2026, and milestone payments from pharma partners like Lilly, Novartis and J&J.
Has Isomorphic Labs dosed any patients yet?
No. As of the May 12, 2026 funding announcement, Isomorphic had not dosed a patient. CEO Demis Hassabis originally targeted first-in-human trials by end of 2025 but told Bloomberg in May 2026 he had misspoke and pushed the target to end of 2026.
Who owns Isomorphic Labs?
Isomorphic Labs is an Alphabet company spun out of Google DeepMind, founded by Demis Hassabis in 2021. Its May 12, 2026 Series B of $2.1 billion was led by Thrive Capital, with Alphabet, GV, CapitalG, MGX, Temasek and the UK Sovereign AI Fund also participating.
Is Insilico Medicine ahead of Isomorphic Labs in AI drug discovery?
Yes on clinical proof. Insilico Medicine reported a positive Phase IIa readout in Nature Medicine in June 2025 for its AI-designed molecule rentosertib, while Isomorphic Labs has not yet dosed a patient as of mid-2026, per its May 2026 funding announcement.
Could AI replace Isomorphic Labs?
Unlikely to be replaced by generic AI since AI is Isomorphic's own product, but big pharma is building comparable in-house capability, such as Roche's roughly $3 billion Recursion Pharmaceuticals deal, which could reduce reliance on Isomorphic's platform over time.
What is Isomorphic Labs valued at?
Isomorphic Labs did not disclose a valuation when it closed its $2.1 billion Series B on May 12, 2026. Total capital raised across all rounds is reported at roughly $2.6 billion as of that date.
