The call

Itaú keeps growing profit and share in corporate and wealth banking while digital rivals like Nubank chip away only at the mass-market edge.

Itaú Unibanco is a giant Brazilian bank that serves 60 to 70 million customers and makes money from corporate foreign exchange deals, wholesale banking, wealth management, and insurance. Rivals like Nubank and Mercado Pago are taking some mass-market customers with simpler, cheaper services, but they have not yet cracked into the lucrative business of serving big companies or managing wealth for rich clients, which is where Itaú makes most of its money; AI is not a threat because banking requires a government license that only Itaú has. The biggest risk is if Nubank figures out how to compete for small and mid-sized business customers, or if Brazil's government rules against Itaú's digital wallet business.

Why
01
AI pressure: None apparent. AI is not licensed to hold deposits or lend; Itaú uses it internally, like its own generative-AI investment agent launched June 2025. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: Nubank, Mercado Pago, Banco Inter, C6 Bank. Nubank has over 100 million LatAm customers and is rated Brazil's strongest banking brand, but so far it mostly wins mass-market retail, not corporate or wealth clients. Could a giant copy it? No, they are blocked.
03
What protects it. A banking license, R$1.5 trillion balance sheet, 60 to 70 million customers, and dominant corporate FX and payroll lending books that digital challengers cannot easily replicate.
What would change this call
Nubank launches SMB or mid-corporate lending or a wealth-management product in Brazil. Would show digital challengers moving upmarket into Itaú's high-ARPU segments, not just mass retail.
CADE's antitrust ruling on digital-wallet restrictions moves past appeal to a final remedy. Would show regulators forcing open Itaú's payment rails rather than leaving its moat intact.
Itaú reports ROE below 18% for two straight quarters without a macro shock explaining it. Would show real profitability erosion rather than just headline growth continuing.

Nubank is the top digital challenger and was ranked Brazil's strongest banking brand by sentiment in March 2026, but Itaú remains Brazil's most valuable banking brand at roughly US$9.9 billion, up 15% year over year, and the largest bank by assets in Latin America.
Will AI replace jobs at Itaú Unibanco?
Itaú runs over 1,300 AI models in production as of mid-2025 and closed 319 branches in 2025, showing AI-linked efficiency gains, but its banking license and credit-underwriting liability, covering a R$1.5 trillion loan book as of March 2026, cannot be automated away.
