The call

JioSaavn's size comes from Jio's telecom bundle, not from beating YouTube Music or Spotify on product, and its future shape depends on how Reliance treats it after the Jio Platforms IPO.

JioSaavn lets Indians stream music and is owned by Reliance, which also runs a massive phone network with over 500 million users. Right now it survives because Reliance can bundle it free with phone service and has deals with 900+ music labels, which are hard for AI or new competitors to replace quickly. YouTube Music and Spotify are grabbing Indian listeners fast though, and only 8% of Indians pay for music, so the real question is whether Reliance keeps JioSaavn as its own music app or folds it into a bigger AI product it is building, a decision the company is expected to make within the next 6 to 12 months that could completely change what JioSaavn becomes.

Why
01
AI pressure: YouTube Music (Google AI recommendations) and generic AI playlist/DJ tools. AI-driven discovery on YouTube Music already pulls free listeners away, and better AI recommendation engines could make JioSaavn's catalog feel interchangeable. Could AI do the core job? Only partly.
02
Bigger players: YouTube Music and Spotify India. YouTube Music draws 411M unique visitors in India and Spotify India grew listening 46% YoY, both outside Jio's bundle. Could a giant copy it? Probably.
03
What protects it. Bundling into Jio's 500M+ subscriber base and MyJio app keeps installs and usage high without JioSaavn having to win on product alone.
What would change this call
Jio Platforms IPO RHP names JioSaavn as standalone asset or folds it into generic digital services line. shows whether JioSaavn keeps distinct product mandate or gets absorbed into Jio's consumer/AI layer.
JioSaavn AI features get tied to Reliance's Gemini/Jio AI stack within 12 months. shows Reliance repositioning JioSaavn as an AI integration point rather than a standalone music product.
India's paid streaming base grows toward or away from the 14M to 30M by 2028 industry projection. shows whether JioSaavn's subscription economics can reduce reliance on Reliance's telecom subsidy.

Questions people ask
Is JioSaavn profitable as a standalone business?
JioSaavn does not disclose standalone financials. It sits inside Jio Platforms, which reported Q1 FY27 profit of ₹7,764 crore on ₹45,961 crore revenue (July 17, 2026), but that figure covers all of Jio's telecom and digital businesses, not JioSaavn alone.
Who owns JioSaavn?
JioSaavn is owned by Reliance's Jio Platforms. Reliance Industries acquired roughly 75% of Saavn for about $104 million cash plus stock in March 2018, merging it with JioMusic into a company valued near $1 billion, completed December 2018.
Could AI replace JioSaavn?
AI can replicate JioSaavn's recommendation and playlist curation, which is commoditized across Spotify and YouTube Music. But its 900+ direct label licensing deals (Universal, Sony, T-Series, Saregama) and Jio's 500 million plus subscriber bundling are harder for pure AI products to replicate as of 2025.
Who is JioSaavn's biggest competitor?
YouTube Music leads India's free discovery layer with 411 million unique visitors in December 2024, while Spotify India grew fastest, reaching 88 million MAU by January 2025 with 46% YoY listening growth, per Comscore data cited in Livemint.
How many users does JioSaavn have?
JioSaavn self-reports over 100 million monthly active users as of 2024-2025 and says it passed 500 million Google Play downloads by December 2025, with an 80 million plus track catalog across 16 languages.
Will JioSaavn survive Jio Platforms' IPO process?
Jio Platforms filed a DRHP with SEBI in 2026 and reported Q1 FY27 results on July 17, 2026. Whether JioSaavn remains a distinct product line or gets folded into Jio's broader AI-driven MyJio consumer layer is unresolved as of mid-2026.
