The call

JUUL holds a real FDA and patent shield but keeps losing shelf space to Vuse and unauthorized Chinese disposables that the FDA has not stopped.

JUUL sells nicotine vaping devices and received rare FDA permission to keep selling menthol flavors starting in 2025. However, JUUL's market share crashed from 72% in 2018 to around 28-36% by 2022, and it keeps falling because cheap, unauthorized vapes from China (Geek Bar, Raz, Breeze) are selling much faster and the FDA is not stopping them. Altria, the big tobacco company that owned over one third of JUUL, gave up and sold its stake for almost nothing in 2023, a sign that the company's value is gone. The one thing that could turn this around is if the FDA actually starts enforcing its rules and blocks those Chinese vapes from being sold.

Why
01
AI pressure: None apparent. AI models and agents have no bearing on physical vape hardware or its retail distribution. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: Vuse (British American Tobacco). Vuse now leads US e-cigarette share at 34.9% while JUUL has fallen from 72% in 2018 to roughly 28-36%. Could a giant copy it? Yes, easily.
03
What protects it. FDA's rare menthol marketing authorization plus an ITC ruling and exclusion order against Altria's NJOY over patent infringement.
What would change this call
FDA takes enforcement action against Geek Bar, Raz, or Breeze disposables within 12 months. Would show JUUL's regulatory moat has real teeth against unauthorized rivals.
FDA grants or denies JUUL2 US PMTA clearance (submitted 2023, still pending). Would show whether JUUL can relaunch a competitive product domestically.
JUUL's US e-cigarette market share figure in next Goldman Sachs or Nielsen retail tracking report. Would show whether share erosion continues or stabilizes.

Questions people ask
Is JUUL Labs profitable in 2026?
JUUL Labs does not publicly disclose financials. Its last verifiable revenue figures are from 2018 (roughly $1-2B). No credible 2025-2026 revenue or profit figure exists; company-cited or vendor estimates found online are contradictory and unconfirmed.
Who owns JUUL Labs now?
JUUL Labs is private. Altria bought 35% for $12.8B in December 2018, wrote that stake down to $250M by 2023, and fully exited in March 2023, trading its stake for a heated-tobacco IP license instead of cash.
Is JUUL losing market share to competitors?
Yes. JUUL's US share fell from about 72% in 2018 to roughly 28-36% by 2022. As of May 2025 Goldman Sachs data, Vuse led the category at 34.9% while Chinese disposables like Geek Bar grew 729% year over year.
Could AI replace JUUL Labs' business?
No. JUUL sells physical vape hardware and pods, a manufacturing and retail business AI does not automate. Its only AI-adjacent feature is planned biometric facial or fingerprint age verification for the JUUL2 device, still awaiting FDA clearance as of October 2025.
Who is JUUL Labs' biggest competitor?
Vuse, owned by British American Tobacco, led the US e-cigarette market at 34.9% share as of May 2025 per Goldman Sachs data, while unauthorized Chinese disposables Geek Bar, Raz, and Breeze combined for roughly 25-32% and are growing fastest.
Did JUUL get FDA approval to keep selling its vapes?
Yes. On July 17, 2025 the FDA issued Marketing Granted Orders authorizing JUUL's tobacco and menthol System, making it only the third e-cigarette maker ever granted menthol authorization, reversing a 2022 marketing denial order.
