The call

Kalshi's growth is real and fast, but nearly all of it sits on sports contracts that courts in multiple states are still deciding are even legal to sell.

Kalshi lets people bet on real-world events like sports and elections through a regulated exchange. Most of its explosive growth comes from sports betting contracts, which multiple states are currently suing to block, claiming they violate state gambling laws. The company has real advantages, like its federal license and deals with major platforms like Robinhood and CNN, but if courts rule that states can override federal rules on these bets, Kalshi's revenue could collapse. The biggest question is whether a Michigan court case will let the federal government keep control or give states the power to shut this down.

Why
01
AI pressure: None apparent. AI and algorithmic traders are customers here, institutional volume up sharply, not a force replacing the exchange. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: CME Group. CME is suing the CFTC to get its own crypto perpetuals approved on the same regulated rail Kalshi uses. Could a giant copy it? Probably.
03
What protects it. A CFTC exchange license that lets it offer sports contracts nationwide while state-licensed books like DraftKings stay boxed in.
What would change this call
Circuit or Supreme Court ruling on CFTC preemption over state gambling law for sports contracts. Would show whether Kalshi's core sports-contract revenue model is legally durable nationwide.
Kalshi's sports contracts share of total revenue at end of 2026 (currently 80-90%). Would show whether Kalshi is diversifying away from litigation-exposed sports revenue.
Polymarket US market share trend after World Cup volume normalizes. Would show whether Kalshi's event-driven volume lead over Polymarket is durable or temporary.

Questions people ask
Is Kalshi profitable in 2026?
Kalshi has not disclosed profit figures. It told Bloomberg its annualized revenue exceeded $1.5B as of the May 7, 2026 Series F announcement, up from about $25M in December 2024, but no net income or profitability data has been released.
Is Kalshi legal or could it be banned?
Kalshi's legality is being litigated in at least eight states. A federal judge in New York denied its injunction against state gambling enforcement on July 7, 2026, while a federal court temporarily blocked Minnesota's ban on July 28, 2026, leaving the outcome unresolved.
Who is Kalshi's biggest competitor?
Polymarket is Kalshi's closest rival, having obtained a CFTC regulatory path via its QCX acquisition and launching a US arm between December 2025 and May 2026. Third-party data put Polymarket at 25-28% US share versus Kalshi's 58-67% as of mid-2026.
Could AI replace Kalshi?
No. Kalshi's core value is its CFTC Designated Contract Market license, granted November 2020, plus its clearing infrastructure and distribution deals with Robinhood, CNN and Fox. AI trading firms are participants driving 800% institutional volume growth to May 2026, not replacements for the exchange.
Who owns Kalshi?
Kalshi is privately held and venture-backed, founded in 2018 by Tarek Mansour and Luana Lopes Lara. Investors from its Series F, announced May 7, 2026 at a $22B valuation, include Coatue, Sequoia, a16z, IVP, Paradigm and Morgan Stanley.
How much is Kalshi worth?
Kalshi was valued at $22B after a $1B Series F round announced May 7, 2026, led by Coatue with Sequoia, a16z, IVP, Paradigm and Morgan Stanley. This followed an $11B valuation just five months earlier in December 2025.
