The call

Khan Academy's nonprofit status and district ties keep it stable now, but its AI partners could turn into rivals if incentives shift.

Khan Academy is a free online school that teaches math, science, and other subjects through videos and practice problems. It is hard to replace because schools trust it (it handles student data carefully), districts already use it in classrooms, and Khan has special data showing which teaching methods work best. The big risk is that Google and Microsoft, who currently help Khan by giving it free technology, could instead build their own teaching tools and sell them directly to schools, taking Khan's customers.

Why
01
AI pressure: Free ChatGPT and Google Gemini offering instant homework help. Free chatbots give instant homework answers, pulling casual self-directed learners away from Khan's core funnel. Could AI do the core job? Only partly.
02
Bigger players: Google (Gemini for Education) and Microsoft (Copilot for Education). Both currently subsidize Khan's AI tools but could ship their own district-wide AI tutors and cut Khan from contracts. Could a giant copy it? Probably.
03
What protects it. Nonprofit trust, FERPA/COPPA compliance, district ties since 2019, and learner data that sharpens its AI tutoring.
What would change this call
Google ships Gemini Reading Coach or a district-wide AI tutor in 2026. Would show Google shifting from Khan partner to direct district competitor.
Khan Academy Districts redesign adoption data after August-September 2026 rollout. Would show whether districts are retaining or dropping Khan's paid tier.
Next IRS Form 990 filing revenue and net asset figures. Would show whether philanthropic funding is contracting or holding steady.

  • $128.5M net assets recorded (2025-03)
  • 1.4M+ students using Khanmigo AI tutor (2025-06)
Named risks
  • Google or Microsoft flips from AI infrastructure partner to direct district-sold AI tutor competitor. Severity: high
  • Revenue is philanthropy-dependent and swung from $53M to $98M year to year with a net loss in one recent filing. Severity: medium
  • Free general AI chatbots erode the self-directed homework-help funnel that built Khan Academy's user base. Severity: medium
  • Khan TED Institute credential faces an estimated 4-7 year accreditation path with uncertain market fit. Severity: medium
  • Internal restructuring and 'silent layoffs' reported in design/non-product roles tied to 2023 Khanmigo pivot. Severity: low

Questions people ask
Is Khan Academy profitable in 2026?
Khan Academy is a nonprofit, not a profit-seeking company. Its IRS Form 990 filed March 2025 showed $98,267,721 total revenue and $128,521,780 net assets, but a prior filing (Nov 2024) showed only $53,234,817 revenue with a roughly $4.9 million net loss, showing year-to-year volatility.
Who owns Khan Academy?
No one owns Khan Academy in an equity sense. It is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit founded by Sal Khan, incorporated in 2008, funded by philanthropic grants and donations, including $89.9 million from 136 funders between 2023 and 2025, led by Silicon Valley Community Foundation at $17.1 million.
Could AI chatbots replace Khan Academy?
Free tools like ChatGPT and Gemini already erode Khan Academy's homework-help use case, but its district distribution (since 2019), College Board SAT/AP partnership, and learner-history data, shown in a 2026 test to improve AI tutor accuracy by 6.1%, give it institutional moats general chatbots lack as of May 2026.
Who is Khan Academy's biggest competitor?
IXL Learning was flagged ahead of Khan Academy specifically in K-12 supplementary tools by a June 2026 PR-firm-sponsored AI Visibility Index. Coursera ($757M FY2025 revenue) and Duolingo also dwarf Khan Academy's nonprofit revenue scale despite similar or larger user bases.
Does Khan Academy get funded by Google, Microsoft, or OpenAI?
Yes. OpenAI powered the original Khanmigo launch in March 2023, Microsoft donated Azure OpenAI infrastructure and made Khanmigo for Teachers free starting August 2024 (announced further February 2025), and Google's Gemini began powering Khan Academy's Writing Coach on January 21, 2026.
What is Khanmigo and how big is it?
Khanmigo is Khan Academy's AI tutor and teaching assistant, launched with GPT-4 in March 2023. A pilot of about 65,000 students across 53 districts in 2023 reportedly grew to over 1.4 million students by mid-2025, according to a third-party EdTech AI Visibility Index published April 2026.
