The call

Khatabook sits on a five-year-old valuation with an unresolved revenue collapse, squeezed between AI-driven free tools and payment giants adding the same ledger feature.

Khatabook helps small shop owners and traders keep digital records of sales and credit instead of paper notebooks. The problem is that what it does is not hard to copy: Paytm, PhonePe, and BharatPay already have millions of these same merchants as customers, collect real payment data, and are adding the same ledger features on top of their apps. Khatabook planned to make money by lending to merchants through partners, but India's regulators have been cracking down on this business (they shut down a similar product at a rival company in early 2025), and Khatabook has not raised new funding in five years, suggesting its owners may have given up on growth. The one thing that could matter is whether Khatabook finds a buyer willing to pay a real price, or raises fresh capital to try a new business line, but neither looks likely right now.

Why
01
AI pressure: WhatsApp Business and generic AI bookkeeping tools. AI-driven bookkeeping features are turning ledger-keeping into a free add-on, weakening the reason merchants pay for Khatabook. Could AI do the core job? Yes, likely.
02
Bigger players: Paytm, PhonePe, BharatPe. These payment giants already run lending arms and can bundle a ledger feature onto their bigger merchant base and richer transaction data. Could a giant copy it? Yes, easily.
03
What protects it. A large existing base of merchants already used to its ledger app, though this habit offers only weak protection against bigger rivals.
What would change this call
Khatabook's FY25 MCA filing confirms or corrects the ₹1.4 Cr revenue figure. Shows whether the business actually collapsed or the number was a reporting error.
RBI issues new enforcement action on NBFC-partnered merchant lending apps. Would signal Khatabook's planned lending pivot faces the same fate as OkCredit's shut-down OkNivesh.
Khatabook announces a new priced funding round or confirms the India domicile flip. Would show investors still back the 2021 valuation instead of a quiet wind-down.

Questions people ask
Is Khatabook profitable in 2026?
No. Khatabook posted an estimated FY24 EBITDA of about ₹-109.7 Cr and a FY22 net loss of ₹111.1 Cr, up from ₹32.5 Cr in FY21. A disputed FY25 revenue figure of just ₹1.4 Cr, if accurate, would signal deepening trouble rather than a turn to profit.
Has Khatabook raised new funding recently?
No new priced round has been publicly reported since its $100M Series C in August 2021, led by Tribe Capital and Moore Strategic Ventures at roughly a $600M valuation. As of mid-2026, the company's equity is still effectively priced against that five-year-old round.
Is Khatabook laying off employees?
Yes. Khatabook cut about 42 employees, 6% of its roughly 700-person staff, in September 2023 as part of a stated push toward profitability, followed by another round of over 40 layoffs reported around May 2024.
Who are Khatabook's biggest competitors?
Direct ledger-app peers include OkCredit and Vyapar, but the bigger threat comes from Paytm, PhonePe and BharatPe, which already bundle bookkeeping and lending features atop far larger merchant bases and richer UPI payment data than Khatabook has.
Could AI replace Khatabook's core app?
The core ledger and reminder features are commodity functions that generic AI-enabled bookkeeping tools and platforms like WhatsApp Business could replicate. Khatabook's harder-to-copy asset is its merchant transaction data and NBFC lending partnerships, not the ledger UI itself.
Who owns Khatabook?
Khatabook is privately held, founded by Ravish Naresh with Ashish Sonone, Dhanesh Kumar, Vaibhav Kalpe and Jaideep Poonia. Investors from its August 2021 Series C include Sequoia Capital, Tencent, Tribe Capital, Moore Strategic Ventures, Alkeon Capital and B Capital.
