The call

Kimia Farma survives on state backing and a shrinking regulated niche while its open-market pharmacy and drug business keeps losing ground to Kalbe Farma and telehealth apps.

Kimia Farma makes and sells pharmaceuticals across Indonesia and runs drugstores, protected by government licenses for handling narcotics and supplying to the national health program. But the company is shrinking: revenue fell 7.2% last year, it has lost money four years straight, and it is being outrun by Kalbe Farma, a private company four times its size that is winning customers in the open market where Kimia Farma has no special protection. Online pharmacies like Halodoc are also pulling customers away from its stores. The company is being propped up by the government with debt relief and cash injections, which keeps it alive but does not fix the core problem of a business that customers and patients are choosing to leave.

Why
01
AI pressure: Halodoc and Alodokter telemedicine apps. AI-driven telehealth triage and delivery apps pull walk-in customers away from Kimia Farma's physical pharmacies. Could AI do the core job? Only partly.
02
Bigger players: Kalbe Farma. Kalbe Farma, private and about four times Kimia Farma's revenue, keeps winning open-market drug segments Kimia Farma can't protect. Could a giant copy it? Probably.
03
What protects it. State ownership gives it narcotics licensing, GMP certification, and a fixed role supplying Indonesia's national health insurance program.

Consolidated revenue for a quarter grows YoY instead of declining. Would show the four-year revenue slide has reversed.
IDR 1.86T corruption investigation escalates to formal prosecution or board removals. Would show governance risk materializing, not just an unresolved allegation.

Questions people ask
Is Kimia Farma profitable in 2026?
No. Kimia Farma posted a net loss of IDR 334.96 billion for FY2025, and Q1 2026 revenue fell 6.34% YoY to IDR 2.03 trillion. The loss narrowed 60.23% from FY2024, but the company remains loss-making as of June 2026.
Who owns Kimia Farma?
PT Bio Farma, Indonesia's state vaccine maker, holds 89.82% of Kimia Farma as of May 2026, with PT ASABRI holding 4.43%. Ultimate control runs through the sovereign wealth vehicle Danantara Indonesia, launched February 2025.
Is Kimia Farma losing to Kalbe Farma?
Yes. Kalbe Farma, a private rival, generates roughly IDR 36.21 trillion in trailing revenue versus Kimia Farma's IDR 9.09 trillion, nearly 4x, and is profitable while Kimia Farma has posted losses for multiple consecutive years through FY2025.
Is Kimia Farma being bailed out?
Yes. In December 2025 its retail arm Kimia Farma Apotek signed a 10-year debt restructuring covering IDR 4.5 trillion plus IDR 1.4 trillion with five banks, and in January 2026 Danantara via Bio Farma extended an IDR 846 billion shareholder loan.
Could AI replace Kimia Farma?
Not its core licensed manufacturing and narcotics-distribution business, which requires GMP certification and state ties AI cannot substitute. But telemedicine platforms like Halodoc and Alodokter are already eroding its retail pharmacy foot traffic as of April 2025 industry reporting.
What is the corruption allegation against Kimia Farma?
In August 2025 a labor federation called on Danantara to investigate an alleged Rp1.86 trillion corruption issue tied to investment fund allocation at Kimia Farma. No prosecution outcome had been reported as of the data cutoff.
