The call

Kraft Heinz still owns household names and shelf space, but store brands keep eating into sales while a new CEO's turnaround plan and a possible Berkshire exit both remain unresolved.

Kraft Heinz makes ketchup, beans, pasta sauce, and other packaged foods sold in supermarkets worldwide. The real threat is not a competitor company or AI, but store brands (like Walmart's and Kroger's private labels) that cost less and are taking shelf space and customer money. Kraft Heinz has lost money for nine straight quarters, and the company itself admitted its famous brand names are worth less now by writing down $9.3 billion in value. The one thing that could turn this around is if the new CEO's turnaround plan actually gets people buying Kraft Heinz products again instead of cheaper store brands, but that has not happened yet and will not be clear until the next earnings report in August 2026.

Why
01
AI pressure: AI-driven private-label design and demand tools used by Walmart, Kroger, Aldi. Retailers use AI to speed up store-brand formulation and shelf placement, making cheaper copies of Kraft Heinz products faster. Could AI do the core job? Only partly.
02
Bigger players: Walmart, Kroger, Aldi store brands. Private label grew from 19% to 26% of packaged food units from 2019 to 2024, pulling shoppers away from Kraft Heinz brands on the same shelf. Could a giant copy it? Probably.
03
What protects it. Decades-old brand recognition and locked-in shelf space across major grocery chains give it leverage retailers still need.

Questions people ask
Is Kraft Heinz profitable in 2026?
Yes on an operating basis: Q1 2026 revenue hit $6.05B (up 0.8% y/y) with EPS of $0.58 beating consensus, and free cash flow grew ~60% y/y to $0.8B (reported May 2026). But FY2025 saw a $9.3B impairment and Q4 2025 diluted EPS fell 68.8% y/y, per the Feb 11, 2026 earnings release.
Could AI replace Kraft Heinz?
Not directly. Kraft Heinz's manufacturing, distribution and brand equity (Heinz, Philadelphia, Kraft) are largely AI-insulated, but AI is accelerating retailers' ability to clone Kraft Heinz SKUs as private label, per a Feb 8, 2026 analysis. Internally, Kraft Heinz itself uses AI tools like TasteMaker and Lighthouse to cut costs, not replace its core business.
Who is Kraft Heinz's biggest competitor?
The company's own filings and analysts point less to CPG rivals like Mondelez or General Mills and more to retailer private-label brands, whose share of U.S. packaged food units rose from 19% in 2019 to 26% in 2024, directly eroding Kraft Heinz's commoditized categories like cheese and mac and cheese.
Is Berkshire Hathaway selling its Kraft Heinz stake?
Not yet confirmed. Kraft Heinz filed an SEC registration in January 2026 enabling Berkshire to sell its full ~27.5-28% stake (325.6M shares), but Berkshire CEO Greg Abel said on March 5, 2026 there were 'no immediate plans' to sell, leaving the overhang unresolved.
Is Kraft Heinz still splitting into two companies?
No, the split announced September 2, 2025 was paused on February 11, 2026 under new CEO Steve Cahillane, who redirected the company toward a $600M investment in product, marketing and price cuts instead; the split has not been formally cancelled.
Is Kraft Heinz's revenue declining?
It has been: FY2025 net sales fell to roughly $24.9-25B, down about 3.5% from ~$25.8B in 2024, following what analysts flagged as nine consecutive quarters of contraction through Q4 2025. Q1 2026 showed a slight rebound to $6.05B (up 0.8% y/y), but Q2 2026 guidance points to another 3-5% decline.
