The call

Krita survives on a thin donation base and a handful of paid developers, with product viability intact but financial cushion thin and concentrated in a few people.

Krita is a 27-year-old free digital painting program run by the KDE open-source community, supported by about 2,700 euros per month from individual donors and a small team of paid developers. Adobe cannot seriously compete because charging money would cannibalize their subscription business, and AI image generators like Midjourney handle quick concept work but do not replace the hand-painting workflow that Krita's users actually want. The software itself will probably survive for years, but the real question is whether the donation funding and developer team can stay steady, or whether the project gets stuck with too few people doing too much work.

Why
01
AI pressure: Midjourney, Adobe Firefly, DALL-E, and third-party AI Diffusion plugins for Krita. AI image generators commoditize concept art and inpainting, pulling in hobbyists at the top of the funnel, but hand-painting workflows stay intact. Could AI do the core job? Only partly.
02
Bigger players: Adobe (Photoshop, Fresco). Adobe cannot underprice a free tool without cannibalizing its own subscription revenue, so it competes on features, not price. Could a giant copy it? Probably.
03
What protects it. GPL licensing, embedding in the KDE ecosystem, and a stable niche among artists who want free, no-subscription painting software.
What would change this call
Krita 6.0 becomes primary stable branch by end of 2026 without major regressions. Shows the small dev team can still ship major releases on schedule.
Development Fund falls below roughly 2,000 euros per month or backer count drops well under 237. Would show donor base eroding and sponsored roles becoming unsustainable.
A corporate sustaining sponsor is announced on fund.krita.org. Would show funding diversifying beyond individual donations for the first time.
Key numbers
  • Development Fund: ~€2,732/month from 237 backers (2026-06)
  • Zero corporate backers after 14 years (2026)
  • 3-4 paid staff, stable for years (2026)
Named risks
  • Staffing concentration on two key maintainers (Halla Rempt, Dmitry Kazakov) with no disclosed succession plan. Severity: high
  • Thin, flat donor base with zero corporate sponsors as of June 2026. Severity: high
  • Krita 6.0 remains early access/experimental with ongoing bugfix releases through mid 2026. Severity: medium
  • Generative AI absorbing hobbyist top-of-funnel users shifting market away from traditional painting tools. Severity: medium
  • Community friction from third-party AI plugins operating outside official forum's AI restrictions. Severity: low

Questions people ask
Is Krita Foundation profitable?
Krita Foundation is a Dutch non-profit, not a for-profit business, so profitability does not apply. Its Development Fund runs on roughly €2,732 per month from 237 individual backers and zero corporate sponsors as of June 2026, supporting 3 to 4 sponsored developers.
Could AI replace Krita?
Not the core product. Generative AI tools like Midjourney and Firefly commoditize quick concept art and inpainting, absorbed partly via the third-party Krita AI Diffusion plugin, but Krita's leadership publicly rejected integrating generative AI in March 2024, calling results 'bland, repetitive'.
Who owns Krita Foundation?
Krita is developed by Stichting Krita Foundation, a Dutch non-profit foundation headquartered in Deventer, Netherlands. It has no parent company, no equity investors, and no known acquisition history; it is financially independent, per krita.org's donations page.
Who is Krita's biggest competitor?
Adobe (Photoshop, Fresco) dominates professional creative software via Creative Cloud subscriptions generating around $20B, per Adobe's 2025 stockholder letter dated 2026-07-24. Procreate is cited as Krita's top rival among illustrators, though it is iPad-exclusive and paid.
Is Krita free to use?
Yes. Krita is GPL-3.0 licensed free and open-source software available on Linux, Windows, macOS, Android, ChromeOS and Haiku. Optional paid store versions on Steam, Microsoft Store and Epic Games Store fund development but add no exclusive features.
Does Krita have generative AI features?
No. As of July 2026 the Krita Foundation has shipped no official generative AI feature. Its community forum reaffirmed and tightened restrictions on promoting AI-generation tools in April 2026, though a separate third-party plugin, Krita AI Diffusion, adds Stable Diffusion capability.
