The call

Kuda holds real regulatory protection but is being outgrown by same-licensed rivals while its funding and headcount keep shrinking.

Kuda Bank lets Nigerians do banking on their phones and has about 7 million customers and a government license that banks like Moniepoint and OPay also have. What makes it hard to copy is the license itself, which the government only gives to a few companies, so new startups or foreign banks cannot just walk in and do the same thing. However, Kuda's real problem is not that its business model is being copied, but that other licensed banks like Moniepoint and OPay are growing much faster (Moniepoint processes about 14 times more money than Kuda does), so Kuda is losing the race even though the rules are the same for everyone. Kuda lost less money in 2024 than before, which is good, but it has not raised new funding since 2021 and cut its staff three times in less than two years, which suggests it may be running out of cash. The one thing that could change everything is if Kuda raises fresh investment money from new investors in the next year, or if its losses stop shrinking and it starts burning through cash faster again, because right now it is in a speed competition it might lose.

Why
01
AI pressure: None apparent. No AI lab or agent is taking Nigerian retail banking share yet; the fight is between licensed digital banks. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: Moniepoint and OPay. Moniepoint processed ₦412T in 2025 versus Kuda's ₦29T, and OPay has 50-60M users to Kuda's 7M, same license, bigger scale. Could a giant copy it? Probably.
03
What protects it. CBN national microfinance license, NDIC-insured deposits, and 7M KYC-verified users make switching costly and entry slow.

Questions people ask
Is Kuda Bank profitable in 2026?
Not fully confirmed profitable, but close: Kuda's net losses narrowed 84% from $35.11M in 2023 to $5.83M in 2024, driven by cost cuts and stronger Nigerian revenue, per reporting dated 2026-03-27. No 2025 or 2026 net income figure has been publicly disclosed.
Has Kuda Bank had layoffs?
Yes, three rounds in under 24 months: ~100 senior staff left late 2024/early 2025, a 5% workforce cut hit in March 2025, and 'hundreds' more were laid off across marketing, operations, engineering and support in a restructuring announced 2026-03-25.
Who owns Kuda Bank?
Kuda is privately held, founded by Babs Ogundeyi and Musty Mustapha, backed by VCs including Target Global and Valar Ventures. Its last priced funding round was a $55M Series B in August 2021 valuing the company at $500M; no newer priced round has been confirmed since.
Is Kuda Bank bigger than Moniepoint or OPay?
No. Moniepoint processed ₦412 trillion in 2025 versus Kuda's ₦29 trillion, roughly 14 times more, and OPay has 50-60 million users against Kuda's 7 million as of 2026, about 8 times the user base, per data through 2026-05-30.
Could AI replace Kuda Bank?
Unlikely to replace it outright. Kuda holds a CBN national microfinance banking license (upgraded December 2025) and NDIC-insured deposit status that AI-only entrants cannot obtain, though customer support and fraud/KYC workflows are increasingly automatable industry-wide.
Is Kuda Bank raising new funding in 2026?
No confirmed new priced round as of mid-2026. Kuda attempted a roughly $20M bridge round at a flat $500M valuation in 2023 that did not close, per TechCrunch reporting dated 2024-01-16, and no subsequent round has been publicly reported.
