Lambda Labs
GPU cloud provider renting Nvidia chips to AI labs and hyperscalers.
Lambda is a fast-growing GPU landlord whose biggest customers, Microsoft and Nvidia, could also become its biggest competitors.
Lambda Labs is a company that rents powerful computer processors (GPUs) to other companies that need them for artificial intelligence work. It has grown fast and has big customers like Microsoft. However, renting GPUs is not hard to copy: Microsoft, Amazon, and Google already rent GPUs too, and they are much bigger. The real danger is that Lambda's biggest customers, like Microsoft, might just build their own GPU rental system instead of paying Lambda, the same way Meta just did with its own internal compute service. If Microsoft decides to stop using Lambda and only use its own computers, Lambda could lose a huge chunk of its business overnight.
Lambda files S-1 or IPO in H2 2026 as targeted. Would show investor confidence holds despite category-wide repricing after Meta Compute.
GPU rental pricing across neoclouds (Lambda, CoreWeave, Nebius) falls further after Meta Compute launch. Would show margin compression from oversupply and hyperscaler self-supply pressure.
- Annualized revenue ~$760M, up 79% YoY
- Series E raised $1.5B+, led by TWG Global
- CoreWeave stock fell 40%+ after Meta Compute news
- Largest customers Microsoft and Nvidia could insource compute like Meta did in July 2026.
- Heavy debt load: $1B credit facility plus $775M+ in prior debt facilities funding capex.
- IPO repeatedly delayed past 1H 2026 target with no S-1 filed as of June 2026.
- Sector wide data center noise, zoning lawsuits and moratoria across multiple US states.
- Commoditized GPU rental market faces pricing compression as neocloud sentiment turns.
| Rival | Direction | Evidence |
|---|---|---|
| CoreWeave | gaining on | CoreWeave posted $2.08B Q1 2026 revenue vs Lambda's ~$760M annualized end of 2025 |
| Meta | contesting | Meta launched own compute cloud service July 2026, repricing neocloud sector |
| Microsoft | contesting | Largest partner via Nov 2025 multibillion dollar deal, but could insource like Meta |
| Nebius | gaining on | Nebius Q1 2026 revenue $399M, up 684% YoY, signed Meta and Microsoft supply deals |
| AWS, Azure, Google Cloud | gaining on | Hold ~66% of $330B cloud market as of Feb 2025, already do GPU rental directly |
- Is Lambda Labs profitable?
- No public profitability figures exist. Lambda's revenue was estimated at $760M annualized by end of 2025, up 79% year over year per Sacra, but this is a private company with no audited disclosures, and it just raised a $1B senior secured credit facility in May 2026 to fund heavy GPU buildout.
- Could Microsoft replace Lambda Labs?
- Yes, structurally nothing stops it. Microsoft signed a multibillion-dollar multiyear supply deal with Lambda on November 3, 2025, but Meta already launched its own 'Meta Compute' service in July 2026, tanking rival neocloud stocks, showing hyperscalers can insource GPU capacity rather than rent it.
- Who owns Lambda Labs?
- Lambda is privately held, founded in 2012 by CEO Stephen Balaban and Michael Balaban. It has raised roughly $2.3 to 2.4 billion in equity through a Series E in November 2025 led by TWG Global, with Nvidia, Andrej Karpathy, and ARK Invest also holding stakes.
- Is joining Lambda Labs risky right now?
- It carries sector risk. Lambda grew headcount to about 666 employees by December 2025, up from 235 in 2023, and holds major Microsoft and Nvidia contracts, but the neocloud category it competes in saw CoreWeave and Nebius stocks drop 14 to 17% on July 2, 2026 after Meta's compute announcement.
- What is Lambda Labs' biggest competitor?
- CoreWeave is the scale leader among GPU neoclouds, posting $2.08B in Q1 2026 revenue versus Lambda's roughly $760M annualized at end of 2025. Longer term, AWS, Azure, and Google Cloud, holding about 66% of the $330B cloud market as of February 2025, pose the larger structural threat.
- Is Lambda Labs going public?
- Lambda hired Morgan Stanley, JPMorgan, and Citi in September 2025 targeting a first half 2026 IPO, but as of June 18, 2026 no S-1 had been filed and the timing had slipped to the second half of 2026 or later, partly pending a possible $350M pre-IPO round led by Mubadala Capital.
