The call

Lance has real hotels running its agents today, but nothing yet stops PMS makers or frontier labs from building the same trick into their own products.

Lance makes AI software that acts like a hotel receptionist by watching computer screens and filling out reservation systems without needing special connections. Right now, this is hard for hotels to do any other way, but it is not hard for others to copy: big software companies like Oracle and Mews that hotels already use can add the same AI features, and travel sites like Agoda already have AI doing customer service. The one thing that could save Lance is if it turns its receptionist tool into something hotels depend on to run their whole back-office, not just answer phones, but that has not happened yet, and bigger rivals or cheaper competitors could beat it there first.

Why
01
AI pressure: Anthropic and OpenAI computer-use agents, plus voice infra like ElevenLabs and Retell AI. Labs are commoditizing the exact screen-navigating trick Lance sells, letting any competitor bolt on similar agents cheaply. Could AI do the core job? Yes, likely.
02
Bigger players: PMS vendors Oracle Hospitality, Mews, Cloudbeds, and OTA giant Agoda. Agoda already runs its own AI cost-cutting support agents, and PMS makers could ship native agent layers on their own software any quarter. Could a giant copy it? Yes, easily.
03
What protects it. An early lead in solving the annoying no-API screen-scraping problem, plus 50+ live hotel deployments others would have to match one by one.
What would change this call
Mews, Cloudbeds, or Oracle Hospitality ships a native AI agent layer within two quarters. Would shrink the gap Lance's screen-scraping approach depends on.
Lance announces a named corporate brand-family contract, not franchisee deployments, within 6-9 months. Would show Lance can win durable distribution rather than one-off hotel sign-ups.
Lance Pad usage data shows staff relying on it as daily operational hub by mid-2027. Would confirm workflow lock-in instead of a nice-to-have dashboard.
Key numbers
  • $5 million seed round announced (2026-04-28)
  • Deployed across 50+ hotel properties in the US (2026-06-19)
  • Joined YC Winter 2026 batch (2026-02-05)
Named risks
  • Core computer-use differentiator is being natively commoditized by Anthropic and OpenAI platform features. Severity: high
  • Crowded, fast-growing category with monthly new entrants (Canary, HiJiffy, Akia, Otel AI, Anana) as of Apr 2026. Severity: high
  • Traction claims (50+ hotels, resolution rates) are entirely vendor-stated with no named customer or third-party audit. Severity: medium
  • Commercial engine is nascent, first dedicated Account Executive only hired June 19, 2026. Severity: medium
  • PMS incumbents (Oracle, Mews, Cloudbeds) can ship native agent layers without disrupting their own pricing, shrinking Lance's niche. Severity: high

Questions people ask
Is Lance (the hotel AI startup) profitable in 2026?
No revenue figures are public. Lance is a YC W26 company that raised a $5 million seed round announced April 28, 2026, on top of a roughly $500K YC pre-seed; it is still building its first sales team as of June 2026, indicating pre-revenue or early revenue stage.
Could AI replace Lance's own product?
Yes, plausibly. Lance's differentiator, 'computer-use' agents that visually navigate legacy hotel software without APIs, is exactly the capability frontier labs like Anthropic and OpenAI are building natively into their platforms, which could let any competitor bolt on similar agents cheaply.
Who is Lance's biggest competitor?
Lance competes directly with Canary Technologies and HiJiffy, ranked by Hotel Tech Report as top chatbot vendors for North America and EMEA/APAC respectively, plus Akia, Asksuite, Otel AI, and Anana (a fellow YC S25 company); PMS giants Oracle, Mews and Cloudbeds could also ship native rivals.
Who owns Lance, the hotel AI company?
Lance is privately held and venture-backed, founded by CEO Caleb Chan, COO Gavin Brennen, and CTO Gatik Trivedi. It went through Y Combinator's Winter 2026 batch and raised a $5 million seed round announced April 28, 2026, per traded.co.
Has Lance raised funding recently?
Yes. After a roughly $500K YC-led pre-seed, Lance announced a $5 million seed round on April 28, 2026, per traded.co, and by June 27, 2026 its own job listings described the company as having $5M in total funding.
What is Lance's moat against PMS incumbents like Oracle or Mews?
Lance's stated moat is avoiding API integrations by using vision-based computer-use agents on existing hotel software. This is a workaround, not a structural barrier: PMS vendors charge per-room-per-month so adding native AI agents is additive, not cannibalistic, letting them compete without disrupting their own pricing.
