Letta
Letta builds memory tools for AI agents, and now an open-source coding agent, Letta Code.
Letta's original memory pitch is being folded into the platforms it depended on, so it now bets its small team on a coding agent up against Anthropic and OpenAI.
Letta started by adding memory features to AI chatbots that didn't have them built in. But in 2025, Anthropic, Amazon, and Microsoft all added their own memory tools directly into their AI platforms, which made Letta's original product less useful. Letta switched to building AI code helpers instead, competing against Claude Code and OpenAI Codex with a much smaller team and no new funding for over a year and a half. The company could still survive and win if it raises a big new round of funding soon or if one of its customers publicly shows it is paying a lot of money and keeping the product long term, but neither has happened yet.
A named customer like Bilt or Hunt Club discloses ARR or renewal figures publicly. Would validate that portable memory lock-in beats native platform features.
Anthropic, AWS, or Microsoft add more native agent-memory features to their platforms. Would show continued commoditization of Letta's original memory-layer product.
- $10M seed at $70M post valuation
- No follow-on round disclosed 22 months later
- Letta Code hits 42.5% on Terminal-Bench
- No follow-on funding disclosed 22 months after Sept 2024 seed, raising runway concerns.
- Core memory value proposition absorbed by native features from Anthropic, AWS, and Microsoft.
- Small 5-15 person team now competing in coding agents against Anthropic Claude Code and OpenAI Codex.
- Repeated product pivots, including archiving LettaBot in May 2026, suggest ongoing search for product-market fit.
- All customer traction claims (Bilt, Hunt Club, 11x, Kognitos) are vendor-authored, unverified case studies.
| Rival | Direction | Evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Mem0 | gaining on | Raised ~$24M incl. Series A by July 2025 and ~48,000 GitHub stars vs Letta's ~18,000 pre-rebrand |
| Anthropic | losing to | Shipped native Claude Sonnet 4.5 memory tool Sept 30, 2025; Letta integrated it rather than competing |
| AWS | losing to | Shipped Bedrock AgentCore Memory as native platform feature during 2025-2026 |
| Microsoft | losing to | Shipped Foundry user-scoped memory as native platform feature during 2025-2026 |
| MemPalace | gaining on | New entrant reached ~36,000 GitHub stars within days of April 2026 launch, per blog aggregator |
| OpenAI Codex | contesting | Letta Code launched Dec 2025 to compete directly in coding agent space against Codex |
- Is Letta profitable in 2026?
- Letta has not disclosed profitability or verified revenue figures. The company raised a $10M seed at a $70M post-money valuation on September 23, 2024, led by Felicis Ventures, and has reported no follow-on funding round as of July 2026, 22 months later.
- Could AI replace Letta's core product?
- Letta's original pitch, a bolt-on memory layer for stateless LLMs, is being absorbed by the platforms it depends on. Anthropic shipped a native memory tool in Claude Sonnet 4.5 on September 30, 2025, and Letta responded by integrating that feature into its own agents rather than competing against it.
- Who is Letta's biggest competitor?
- Mem0 is Letta's closest rival in agent memory, with roughly 48,000 GitHub stars versus Letta's prior MemGPT count of about 18,000 stars in February 2024, and Mem0 has raised roughly $24M total including a Series A closed in July 2025.
- What is Letta Code?
- Letta Code is Letta's flagship product since a March 15, 2026 strategic repositioning, a memory-first terminal coding agent reported to score 42.5% on Terminal-Bench and rank first among model-agnostic open-source agents, competing directly with Anthropic's Claude Code and OpenAI's Codex.
- Who owns Letta?
- Letta is a private, venture-backed company founded by Charles Packer (CEO) and Sarah Wooders (CTO), spun out of UC Berkeley's Sky Computing Lab. Its only disclosed funding is a $10M seed led by Felicis Ventures at a $70M post-money valuation, closed September 23, 2024.
- Has Letta raised a Series A?
- No Series A or any follow-on round has been publicly disclosed as of July 30, 2026, roughly 22 months after Letta's $10M seed closed on September 23, 2024, at a $70M post-money valuation led by Felicis Ventures.
