The call

The regulated telecom core keeps growing and paying out, while the AI-agent and global software ambitions sit exposed to Google and AWS with no such cover.

LG Uplus is a phone and internet company in South Korea that serves about 31 million customers through phones, fiber cables, and data centers. The phone business is hard to replace because South Korea only allows three major carriers and the government controls airwave licenses, so competitors like SK Telecom and KT cannot easily steal customers or build competing networks. But LG Uplus is also trying to become an AI software company (ixi-O and other products) to compete globally against Google and AWS, and that part has no special protection and faces real rivals, so it could fail. The key question is whether customers they recently gained from competitors will stay loyal in 2026 and 2027, or switch back once those competitors fix their security problems, which would slow growth and reveal that LG Uplus is still just the third-place carrier.

Why
01
AI pressure: Google, AWS, OpenAI. Its global AI-agent push and AIDC bet compete head-on with Google and AWS, where no license or spectrum protects it. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: SK Telecom, KT Corporation. SKT and KT lost trust after 2025 breaches, handing LG Uplus subscriber gains that could reverse once rivals recover. Could a giant copy it? No, they are blocked.
03
What protects it. Korea's 3-carrier license system, owned spectrum and fiber, and 30.9M billed subscribers no software rival can touch.
What would change this call
KISA's ruling on the October 2025 LG Uplus breach investigation. Would show whether regulatory sanctions dent subscriber trust or license standing.
Whether SKT/KT subscriber counts recover in 2026-2027 as trust rebuilds. Would show if LG Uplus's subscriber gains were borrowed and reverting to ~2% growth.
Progress toward the KRW 5 trillion AIDC order backlog by 2030. Would show whether AI-datacenter capex is paying off or straining dividends/buybacks.
