The call

A small team growing fast in a niche Follett already owns, still needs to prove schools stick around and librarians trust it.

Librar Labs is building software to help school librarians organize books, scan shelves, and recommend reading using artificial intelligence. It is hard to replace right now because Librar has early customers (about 300 schools through Clever integration) and real money backing it, but Follett Corporation already dominates this market with its Destiny system and just added AI features of their own, which shrinks Librar's window to prove itself. The one thing that could change everything is whether Follett or another big competitor copies Librar's computer-vision technology (the ability for cameras to read book spines and organize shelves automatically) in the next year or two, because if they do, Librar becomes just a smaller copycat instead of a real alternative. A second wildcard is whether Librar's May 2026 messaging that suggested AI could replace librarians has damaged trust with the librarians and school leaders who actually decide to buy this software.

Why
01
AI pressure: Generic CV/LLM cataloging and shelf-scanning tools. Cataloging and recommendation AI is easy to copy, so Librar's tech edge can shrink as others add the same features. Could AI do the core job? Yes, likely.
02
Bigger players: Follett Corporation (Destiny Library Manager, Destiny AI). Follett already sells the dominant school library system and has shipped its own Destiny AI feature into that installed base. Could a giant copy it? Yes, easily.
03
What protects it. Becoming the system schools actually run their library on, day to day, so switching away is a hassle.
What would change this call
Follett ships a CV-based shelf-scanning or inventory feature within Destiny AI by 2027. Would show Librar's core differentiation has been absorbed by the incumbent.
Independent press names specific school districts switching from Follett/Alexandria to Librar with retention data. Would confirm real customer-taking traction beyond founder self-reports.
Measurable pipeline slowdown or ALA/librarian-association statements following the 'replace the librarian' messaging backlash. Would show reputational damage translating into lost school-district sales.
Key numbers
  • About 300 schools using product, self reported (2026-02-09)
  • Total funding roughly 7.5 to 7.7 million dollars (2026-06-23)
  • 27 new schools added in one month, self reported (2026-05-12)
Named risks
  • Librarian community backlash over 'AI can replace librarians' messaging damaging school-district sales pipeline. Severity: high
  • Follett or another incumbent shipping equivalent CV/inventory feature, collapsing Librar's differentiation. Severity: high
  • Traction figures (schools count, ARR growth) are founder self-reported and unaudited, no named district logos. Severity: medium
  • Very small team (3 to 4 people) creates key-person and execution risk at seed stage. Severity: medium
  • Inconsistent public records on founding year and HQ location signal weak data governance. Severity: low
