The call

Lightspeed has a real payments business growing inside its own customer base, but Toast and Shopify are already eating the ground around it one vertical at a time.

Lightspeed sells checkout and business management software to restaurants and retail shops. It makes money harder to abandon by processing payments through its own system, but Shopify, Square, and Toast are all bigger, better-funded companies offering similar tools in the same markets. They are also copying Lightspeed's newest AI features, so the main thing left that sets Lightspeed apart is its payments processing, which is a basic service many companies offer. The question is whether Lightspeed can keep merchants locked in through payments deals while staying competitive on software features as rivals match its technology.

Why
01
AI pressure: Square AI Beta and Toast Now bundling AI features into rival POS platforms. AI features are getting copied across every POS vendor at once, so Lightspeed's software layer stops being a reason to pick it over rivals. Could AI do the core job? Only partly.
02
Bigger players: Toast and Shopify POS. Toast already pushed Lightspeed out of US restaurants (Upserve sold off in 2025), and Shopify POS is now chasing its remaining retail and hospitality accounts. Could a giant copy it? Yes, easily.
03
What protects it. Payments are wired into the checkout flow at 42% of locations, and ripping that out means re-training staff and re-signing a payments contract.

Questions people ask
Is Lightspeed Commerce profitable in 2026?
Not on a net income basis: Lightspeed posted a Q4 FY2026 net loss of US$28.6 million (quarter ended March 31, 2026). However, it achieved its first full year of positive adjusted free cash flow, about $18.2 million, for FY2026, per company results published May 21, 2026.
Could AI replace Lightspeed Commerce's software?
AI is commoditizing Lightspeed's software layer, inventory entry, website building, and analytics, with rivals Square and Toast shipping similar AI features in 2025-2026. Its regulated payments core (42% penetration as of March 2026) is harder to replace, but software differentiation is eroding across the whole POS category.
Who is Lightspeed Commerce's biggest competitor?
Toast dominates full-service restaurants with about 35% restaurant POS market share as of June 2026, having already pushed Lightspeed to divest its US Upserve hospitality product in April 2025. Shopify POS and Square are separately expanding into Lightspeed's specialty-retail territory.
Is Lightspeed Commerce being acquired or going private?
No pending deal as of 2026. The board concluded a formal strategic sale review in February 2025 and decided to stay public, causing shares to fall 13-18% that day. CFO Asha Bakshani said in May 2026 the company is open to small tuck-ins but not large-scale M&A.
Did Lightspeed Commerce cross $1 billion in revenue?
Yes. Lightspeed's FY2025 (ended March 31, 2025) total revenue reached $1,076.8 million, up 18% year over year, marking the first year the company crossed $1 billion, announced May 22, 2025.
What is Lightspeed Commerce's payments penetration rate?
Payment penetration reached 42% in FY2026 (ended March 31, 2026), up from 37% a year earlier, with transaction-based revenue growing 17% year over year to $185.3 million, per Lightspeed's May 21, 2026 earnings release.
